How many pairs of everyday trousers are reasonable?

I don't wear dresses/skirts and have spent the past two years in the same pair of jeans. Slightly smarter pair of trousers for when they're in the wash or if we go out somewhere.

How many pairs of trousers is normal to have for everyday wear?

More than two! You seriously slob around the house in smart trousers if your jeans are in the wash?

I've got about 7 pairs of jeans in various styles/colours/leg lengths and 2 or 3 pairs of smarter/work trousers.

That's not including the joggers that I live in when working from home Grin

Werehamster · 15/11/2021 11:02

I'm also curious about this!

I have 2 pairs of work trousers, one pair of jeans, a pair of tracksuit bottoms for exercising and 2 pairs of pyjama bottoms for relaxing in. It feels a bit sad really.

womaninatightspot · 15/11/2021 11:03

I have thick leggings for slobbing around, a pair of gardening trousers and two pairs of jeans I alternate for every day wear. I do wear skirts/ dresses though every once in a while if not at work etc.

My jeans have been accumulated over time, some are years old. I wouldn't want anyone to think I go out and buy 7 pairs of jeans at a time Grin

Classicblunder · 15/11/2021 11:20

I have about 5 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of combats, then a couple of pairs of joggers

SnowSurprise · 15/11/2021 11:31

I have pj trousers and a pair of leggings for around the house!

I also have more trousers that don't fit... I've just dropped a size and pulled all my smaller jeans out the cupboard and I don't have a single pair without holes Confused none seem presentable to wear in public. I'm a little shocked I used to wear them.

Plotato · 15/11/2021 11:31

Depends how many days you're wearing them. I feel like I have no clothes but it's because I'm on maternity leave so what I would normally wear 3 days a week (weekend plus my extra day off) I'm now in 7 days. Also how likely you are to get them dirty - if you're often at the muddy park and live with sticky fingered toddlers you need more than someone with no children or pets at home who only visits clean places like shopping centres.

isacurlypotatoaquaver · 15/11/2021 11:41

Tbh i prob have more clothes than I need.
X3 pairs of work trousers
X5 pairs of jeans
X5 pairs of trousers
X3 pairs of joggers
X4 pairs of leggings (mainly worn in winter under a dress or i sleep in them)

Babymamamama · 15/11/2021 11:46

I have about 8 pairs of trousers/jeans on the go at any one time. But I’m not really a skirt person and would only wear dresses to an “event” which isn’t often sadly. You need to invest in yourself if you can. It’s nice to have options and rotate looks around. Mix and match. What is “reasonable” has nothing to do with it IMO.

NoSquirrels · 15/11/2021 11:48

More than 2!

Work trousers x2 I use regularly
Occasion dressing-up trousers x2
Smart jeans x2 (blue/black)
Casual jeans x3? Maybe 4
Dog-walking/gardening jeans
Joggers x 2 (slobbing around house)
Summer-weight trousers x2

cherrypiepie · 15/11/2021 11:51

Mainly:
Work trousers x 2 (4 days not a uniform, also wear dresses and skirts)
Jeans x 3
Trackies (for the house) x 3

I mainly wear skirts and dresses though.

I have also summer trousers and a few pairs of leggings

When I'm at home I wear trackies or leggings not jeans.

maofteens · 15/11/2021 11:51

I have about four pairs of trousers (all versions of the same thing) and two skirts. A few dresses which are really summer only.
My 16 year old daughter has three pairs of jeans in different styles, and about three pairs of jeggings. Now that she died today have a uniform I'm discovering her style - on weekends she lives in jammies.

NothingSafe · 15/11/2021 12:15

I've got:

  • 2 pairs of jeans (1 x baggy 'mom' jeans, 1 x black skinnies I never wear anymore)

-1 pair of black work trousers (usually wear dresses, so these don't tend to get worn)

  • About 100 (15, haha) pairs of joggers/PJ bottoms that aren't suitable for proper outside wear so just for WFH, or maybe to nip to the shop in a couple of the pairs of nicer joggers
  • 2 pairs of dungarees which I basically live in (both black)

I wear a lot of dresses/skirts though, so I don't need too many trousers!

NothingSafe · 15/11/2021 12:17

I have a friend who has 2 pairs of the exact same black jeans, they look amazing on her and she knows it so she only ever wears those - they can look smart dressed up (and she doesn't work in a super-corporate job), and fine with trainers and a jumper too. I envy her 'uniform', haha.

LucentBlade · 15/11/2021 12:20

2x jeans
2x combat trousers
1x smart pair
2x leggings.

When working I had more smart trousers

claymodels · 15/11/2021 12:22

How many pairs of trousers is normal to have for everyday wear?

It depends how often you go out?

SnowSurprise · 15/11/2021 12:55

It depends how often you go out?
Certainly 5 days a week. DC activities (inc one a 25 min walk through the fields) etc DC not toddler age but still going to the park age.

Going out going out pretty much never!

Jabvribt · 15/11/2021 12:59

I have about 12 pairs of trousers but realistically in a week I rotate through 2 pairs of casual jeans and 2 pairs of smart jeans (I work from home about half the week) then have leggings I wear with dresses or nice jeans if I’m doing something a bit out of the normal work, park, child related activity where I’ll get muddy or little hands wiped on me

claymodels · 15/11/2021 12:59

I definitely couldn't manage on just 2 pairs of trousers if I were out every day.

Craftycorvid · 15/11/2021 13:05

Loads! Blush I buy when I find trousers that work well for my (short, curvy) shape, as in the past I couldn’t easily get trousers or jeans that fitted well. If the waist fitted, the hips and thighs were too small and vice versa. If I happened upon a good fit, I’d stockpile on the basis that I may not find the same style again. I tend to keep things, though, and rotate. You don’t sound like you have my hoarding issues, OP! I’d suggest looking at what you wear most often - dresses, skirts, formal or not etc, and be guided by that. No one can say how many items is too many, but when I’ve literally forgotten I own something, I feel it’s a sign.

gogohm · 15/11/2021 13:21

2 pairs of everyday jeans plus an old pair for housework/car maintenance/recycling centre runs etc, 5+ pairs leggings for sport/under tunics/dresses, couple of pairs summer linen trousers, couple of pairs smart/work trousers

Cherrysoup · 15/11/2021 13:24

I have about 4 pairs of yoga pants, smart enough for work but double up for dog walking. I’m forever on the lookout for tall plus size wide trousers. 😳

uncomfortablydumb53 · 15/11/2021 13:35

I wear jeans daily as I don't work and have 12
Some I have had for 4 years and have recently bought 2 black and 2 Dark blue( all skinny)
Could you afford a couple more pairs of jeans as you'll be spending more money on washing them constantly?

SnowSurprise · 15/11/2021 14:21

Some I have had for 4 years
Only 4 years?!? Grin

OP posts:
MrsPsmalls · 15/11/2021 15:41

98% of the time I wear trousers jeans or joggers. I have seven winter pairs in total, with a couple of linen ones substituted in for the summer
