Rug under dining table - yay or nay?

Thinking of getting a rug for underneath our dining table and chairs to add a bit of colour and make it a bit cosier. Is it a bad idea? Does it just get covered in food and feet marks? Do the chairs always get caught up in the rug?

I had a low pile rug under mine pre children and it was really nice. I wouldn't dream of it with kids.

Hahaha 🤣

Oh god no

Today alone the rug would have been painted in porridge and mashed banana, bits of melted cheese and large splotches of curry soon.

Only if you live alone, and eat outside

Sounds like a recipe for a messy rug with bits of food trodden into it.

We’ve got one, but my youngest is 10 so past the throwing food around stage. It adds colour and warmth to our dining room. It’s a low pile and fairly easy to pick food off.

I have one but as per pp, my youngest is 10 so nobody drops food on it. Chairs don't get caught on it either.

Maybe for some colour, one of those flat ethnic type rugs, that you can shake out on the back yard,, but not a lovely thick wool one or those shaggy type rugs, that get all crumbs and cat hair stuck in them.

I have just ordered a new rug for my little living room, old cottage here. its mainly to cover up the crappy carpet, as don't wan't to buy new carpets.

But lots of pictures of rugs, from rug sellers, always show some fancy rugs under dining room tables, like it is a thing that people want now.. I don't even have a dining table these days, never mind a rug underneath one.

I have a flat weave rug under my dining table, no the chairs don't get stuck in it. I don't have small children any more though. Not sure I would have a rug if I did, I can remember the mess!
