Anyone up? I'm in so much pain I can't sleep. What the hell is wrong with my toe?!

Weird thing happened this evening. My right toe started throbbing and getting sore mid evening and when I took of my sock at bedtime it was red and hot and incredibly painful. I suddenly couldn't stand on it and it's been like that since. Haven't been able to get a wink of sleep. Have taken a naproxen, raised my foot on DD's beanbag but bloody hell it's hurting. I don't know what to do with myself.

Infection
Bite
Gout
Inflamed arthritis

The possibilities are endless

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:05

Thanks for posting. I'm a vegetarian and don't really drink so having looked up gout it doesn't seem likely.

Joints have been a bit achy recently though, particularly around ankles. Fuck it really hurts

Infection or gout or a bite.
Do you have a fever?
If not more likely gout or arthritis.
Anti inflammatory and ice and elevation.
Seek medical advice and good luck

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:09

I see what you mean but no I can't see anything 'locally' so to speak. I did have a fungal toe infection on that toe for an age but the GP did a clipping test a few months back and declared me free of it. It's come on so suddenly and I can't walk at all. Hopped to the bathroom about half an hour ago and it was excruciating

@weenurse Thanks - I don't have a temperature but I have been having night sweats for the past week. I thought it was hormone related because I sometimes get that in the run up to my period but it was worse than normal this time.

The anti-inflammatory I took an hour or more ago hasn't touched it.

I feel a bit silly calling 111 and saying I've got a sore toe though!

I would call 111, if it's so painful you can't sleep. It's throbbing, red, hot and you can't stand on it .

merrygoround51 · 14/11/2021 03:14

Could be cellulitis - is the red bit spreading

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:15

I don't think it's spreading, no. Thanks both for posting.

Spider bite? Take an antihistamine perhaps

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:17

Can't see any sign of a bite anywhere, the whole thing just looks red and puffy all of a sudden

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:18

I would try an ice pack but the thought of making it downstairs to get ice is just horrendous

call 111.
could be septic.
is it swollen, with tight skin.

LoveFall · 14/11/2021 03:20

Having had gout, this sounds the same. As I understand it being a non drinking vegetarian does not exclude that diagnosis.

LoveFall · 14/11/2021 03:20

I agree call your 111.

cherriesandcustard · 14/11/2021 03:22

Thanks folks - yes, swollen with tight skin.

That's interesting re gout, i thought it was almost always associated with a particular lifestyle profile

OP posts:
IReallyCan · 14/11/2021 03:24

Definitely call 111.

Snozzlemaid · 14/11/2021 03:34

Sounds like gout to me. Give 111 a call.
I think there are meds you can take to break up the crystals.

Greytminds · 14/11/2021 03:35

Covid toes?!

BookFiend4Life · 14/11/2021 03:35

My first thoughts were gout or a hair wrapped tightly around. Good luck OP, I hope you find out soon!

BlusteringBoobies · 14/11/2021 03:48

OP, like others I would suggest very much it's gout

There is a stigma linking gout and heavy drinking/fatty foods but my DF who is fit and healthy and not a drinker suffered from it for a few years so it can happen. It also started in his toe as the first sign

Flidina · 14/11/2021 03:49

I suffer with gout, and if sounds like you might have it, very painful, swollen, hot to the touch. I'd ring 111 for advice, if it is gout the medication is great, but you do have to take it long term to keep it under control, Hope you get sorted soon.

FOJN · 14/11/2021 04:33

Is it very sensitive to touch, too painful to even rest the duvet on it? That would be consistent with gout. Sudden onset is typical too. I had it once many years ago and I don't fit the lifestyle profile either.

I seem to remember pain relief being the only treatment I was given. I've never had another episode.

Have you checked your temperature? It's a good idea to have as much info as possible if you're going to call 111 and I would just to be on the safe side.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 14/11/2021 04:46

I’m veggie and barely drink, but this does sound exactly like when I had gout. It can be cause by eating a lot of citrus fruit and veg too. DH found this hilarious!

Westfacing · 14/11/2021 05:05

As others have said, sounds like a classic case of gout.
