We are on the vacation of a lifetime in a really beautiful place and fancy accommodation. It's been a really tough year and we haven't been on vacation since 2019. This morning I went to put on my shorts which I had left on the floor and a scorpion fell out. We got it outside, all fine.

It's bedtime, so to wind down I've been reading all about scorpions. Now my skin itches everywhere and I'm staring at the ceiling waiting for one to fall on me.

The internet assures me that they are usually only fatal to children. Great! Except our PFB is with us of course. I've turned the ac down very low because I read they are most active above 77 degrees (fahrenheit, idk Celsius sorry) will the scorpion be attracted to the bed because of our warm bodies in it? I'm considering pulling the pack and play directly under the moving fan (ideally the blades would chop any falling scorpions) and climbing in with the baby to protect her with my body.

Is this a good idea? Also can you tell me if there are any brown recluse spiders in the sheets? Or black widows? Also, we saw a manta ray the first day in the ocean so probably we should only go in a few inches right? Is the pool safe? Do scorpions go in pools? What about that brain eating amoeba? Are agoutis generally rabid? I saw one earlier and it ran away from me really fast so I assume it was trying to lull me into a false sense of security. Is our dog going to be ok with the dog sitter? She looks really happy in the pictures but maybe she is actually wincing in pain?

Please save me from myself, we have 5 days left and I really need to enjoy this and relax as much as possible. Are we going to survive this trip?

Alternately tell me what you're worried about, I can start worrying about it too to keep you company.

I’m worried about how much you’re worrying, if that helps??

also worried about where you are so I never go there ever

I don’t think scorpions can swim, so unless they have little life rafts you should be ok... I’m not sure about brain eating amoebas, as I’m not sure I possess a brain...

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 14/11/2021 02:43

I have just googled agoutis. They are so cute I wouldn’t care about rabies... there’s an antidote, right?

As for the spiders a) don’t read a current ‘this should be illegal’ thread, and b) consider a flamethrower as a useful investment.

Disclaimer: Please do not kill spiders. I do put them outside though (sorry) as I am still very, very scared of them.

Also disclaimer: if this post is serious, ignore me, get therapy ASAP and buy a mosquito net/tent for future holidays

Thank you for sharing my worries maybe if we spread them out enough they will lose strength....

We're in belize it is so so beautiful and I saw a scorpion and now my life is ruined.

This should put your mind at rest a bit

tell me what you're worried about

I had a 9lb tumour removed three weeks ago. The void where it came out of my body is huge and I can’t look at myself in the mirror. I’m terrified that my husband also thinks I’m hideous. The scarring is horrific. The medication is really difficult to stomach and I haven’t been able to get a balance between forcing myself to eat enough to ensure I’m not taking all of these awful tablets on an empty stomach, and eating more than the few bites that will make me vomit again.

I’m afraid of the test results I’m going to get on about ten days’ time, and the additional treatment I’ll face. I’m terrified that this will be the last Christmas I’ll have with my family.

Sorry you’re not loving Belize, OP. Thoughts and prayers etc.

Oh gosh op a lot of stress for you. Are you normally anxious?

My son has been vomiting tonight, my daughter had it last week. It was only my second week back in work after mat leave and I couldn't go in. I'm worried he will be off school and I'll have to take more time off. He is fine in himself. I'm worried daughter will get it again, she's been so poorly. I'm worried where he's picked it up from as daughter stopped puking last Sunday. Bless him he kept apologising. He's not good with sick. Hopefully this will be it now.

Your dog will be grand. Enjoy your holiday.

Where are you in Belize OP?

I LOVE Belize...my favourite place on earth!

BringOnTheOtherWorlders · 14/11/2021 03:09

If there are scorpions, just shake out everything. Shake out clothes, shoes, towels, pull back the bedsheets and check before getting into bed.

The sting is painful, but I have not heard of it being deadly.

That sounds wretched, I hope your medicine regimen gets better very soon and I really hope you get the results you are wanting when your tests come back and I hope too that you have the support of some lovely people in your real life to bolster you up when you're feeling low.
I am just being silly of course, the thread was mostly meant to be lighthearted, about foolish worries that can spin around in your head when you're trying to sleep, but I know I am so lucky to be here. I hope my silliness didn't offend!

Oh it's just terrible when stomach flu comes through!! How many sets of sheets have you changed? Your poor little DS! I hope your daughter doesn't get it again, it's pretty tough to see your baby sick :( I'm about to come off mat leave and only get 5 sick days to share between myself and my little so ideally she'll only get sick about one day every other month. That seems reasonable right?

BringOnTheOtherWorlders
Thank you for the common sense! I have been a shaking machine and will keep on. My mom helpfully reminded me that this is why I shouldn't leave my clothes on the floor. So I'm glad she got an opportunity to do some parenting at least.
