Feel dazed and dream-like when shopping, anyone else?

When shopping I often feel dazed and like I'm in a dream. Everything feels foggy and I struggle to move out of people's way or push a trolley or actually shop.

Does anyone else experience this?

I'm not sure if it's due to the lighting or whether it's anxiety or something else?

Yeah op I think it's lighting and sometime music.

LaBellina · 13/11/2021 12:30

Probably the lighting…

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 13/11/2021 12:31

Yep, I feel like this with strip lighting. I have other sensory issues too.

MellowMelly · 13/11/2021 12:37

Me too! I've put it down to the lighting. I can't sit in my local Costa for too long as the lighting in there starts to make me feel very odd! Almost like I'm spacing out. Didn't think much of it until my friend mentioned she needed to get out of there because of the lighting making her feel woozy.

lomoloko · 13/11/2021 12:38

Yes always felt this. Am HOPELESS at shopping consequently.

MellowMelly · 13/11/2021 12:40

I've actually now just googled it in curiosity and it's called Flicker Vertigo or Bucha effect. This can cause vertigo, feelings of disorientation and nausea.

CasparsWineBar · 13/11/2021 12:53

Yes me- I've been like it since a child, my mum used to have to take me out of the shop to sit in the fresh air.

It's the lighting I think.

Mustardbay · 13/11/2021 12:54

Yes I get this, I have vertigo and I don't know if its linked.

ChocolateLover2000 · 13/11/2021 13:26

I don't mind the lights (I don't think) but I get overwhelmed by the size of supermarkets and all the choice. I think it's too much of a sensory experience IYSWIM.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 13/11/2021 20:31

Yes I get this. If in a supermarket too long I feel hot and woozy

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 13/11/2021 20:34

I know what you mean - I think it happens when you're walking but looking at things to the sides of you. A bit like motion sickness.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/11/2021 20:35

It is the lighting. I don’t get this everywhere but commonly in large shops.

Tumbleweed101 · 14/11/2021 09:28

I get this in one particular supermarket locally and have occasionally felt faint. Just assumed it was me, didn’t realise it was something others got too! There is no natural daylight in this particular store except where the doors are. Mask wearing with misted glasses
made this sensation a lot worse too in other stores (had to wear contacts to go shopping).

KurtWilde · 14/11/2021 09:30

I get this in a couple of the large shops, and my youngest DD always gets it in one particular branch of Home Bargains.

bestcattoyintheworld · 14/11/2021 09:36

Yes, I get this. It's horrible and sometimes triggers an anxiety attack.

HangingOver · 14/11/2021 09:38

I get derealization in shopping centres all the time. I once got stuck in a state of derealization for two weeks and although it's incredibly unpleasant it doesn't and cannot hurt you in any way. It doesn't mean your going to faint or that you're ill or anything. The trick is to ignore it and it goes away eventually.

SnarkyBag · 14/11/2021 09:42

Not on every shop but yesterday in Primark I felt awful just out of nowhere, it was ambush in the senses!

Junipertwigs · 26/09/2023 07:20

Me. I am just semi functional when in big stores with smells sounds and carts and people looking fairly content which immediately makes me feel less than. I am fidgety, somehow come of from a shopping trip (especially for food items) feeling empty and somehow off. I'm thinking it may be dehydration and low blood sugar???

MorvernBlack · 26/09/2023 07:26

I get this and one of my kids does too. Especially in one local shop (unfortunately one of the only decent shops in our town!). But I also always feel flakey in our attic, it has plug in fluorescent lights, I'm going to try different lights up there on the back of this thread.
