Tesco Club Card - late to the party?

leafygarden42 · 13/11/2021 07:55

I have only just downloaded the app onto my phone. Usually shop in Aldi, but went to Tesco yesterday to pick up a few bits.

Anyone who uses the clubcard etc does it really save you as much money as they seem to advertise? And what bargains have you had that I need to know about?

Thanks

Many years ago, I had a return flight to NY paid for with clubcard points.

I've had merlin passes and pizza express vouchers.

I don't spend a huge amount, but stash the points so they add up.

I'm hoping to get a eurotunnel crossing next year. And then start off a denby collection.

I’m surprised people think it’s so good? They are all the usual prices they use to do when things were on offer the only difference is now you need a club card to get the deal, very annoying if you forget to bring it

You. can get the clubcard in small to attach to a keyring and you can also scan the barcode and store it in an card app/wallet on your phone.

The point is it’s just the same deals but now you NEED a club card, I have two sets of keys so sometimes don’t have the right ones out as I wasn’t planning to go to Tesco’s or my phone battery is dead. I think it’s rubbish tbh. Like I said the most important thing is it’s the same deals 😐 not sure why anyone thinks it’s better that you just need the club card to get them now, if I don’t have my club card when I’m out I now avoid Tesco’s for this reason as I resent paying ridiculous prices for not having it with me.

Precipice · 13/11/2021 16:11

I hardly go into Tesco following this change - though it wasn't the 'big shop' for me before that. I really don't like this way of treating club cards, it feels overly pushed in a way that shop cards that collect points and occasionally give you a voucher or some offer don't. But then more broadly I'm cynical towards shop cards - I'm not happy with the inherent data collection involved and subsequent tailored marketing (by which I include vouchers and tailored offers) and I think the trade-off/reward for this is low. (before people comment about card payments being tracked and data sold, I do pay for almost everything in cash; though only partially because of this).

tiredoftiers · 13/11/2021 18:10

If I can get a delivery saver pass for the year for free and a couple of nights in decent hotels each year then I’m quite happy to surrender my data to them. It doesn’t feel much more than other shops are also collecting, and I rarely receive marketing emails from them.

Babyroobs · 13/11/2021 18:14

I haven't cashed in our clubcard vouchers for a couple of years but now have £128 to spend in bella Italia !! So yes definately worth saving the points.

MurielSpriggs · 13/11/2021 18:18

@torquewench

I didn't realise the £10 meal deal was now only £10 with a clubcard until I realised that I'd paid over £20 for it 🤦🏼‍♀️
I'm not sure it's a great system I don't have a card. I used to buy a lot in Tesco, but now you have to watch out for what does seem to be more punitive pricing than special offers. This, combined with fact that they often have no tills open, means that I tend to walk a little bit further to Waitrose instead.

@MarleneDietrichsSmile

I stopped shopping at Tesco as without club card prices are silly

Abd I don’t want to give my e-Mail and address and bombarded by marketing junk

So I’m out Grin

I've had a Clubcard since they first existed, and is extremely rare for me to get an email from them. They are probably the least email pestery of any company I've ever given my email address to.

Oh, and I've just used some points that are due to expire soon, to 'buy' a rail card. So for no effort or cash at all, I'm going to be saving a chunk more money for the next twelve months.

Seriously, I see no downsides to having the card, and over the years it must have saved me thousands of pounds in holidays, breakdown insurance, days out, annual memberships to zoos and (in the past) National Trust or English Heritage, many many free meals out, railcards etc etc.

ISpyCobraKai · 13/11/2021 19:18

I get all the cards, including Clubcard, I love a discount.
I only buy the product if I'd buy it anyway, or its something I'd like but wouldn't buy full price

Shutthefeontdoor · 13/11/2021 19:42

Like a pp I do 2 shops a month in Tesco plus fuel as it’s closest to be. I have Clubcard plus and both mine and DS Tesco mobile. He gets double data for free and I paid £180 upfront with vouchers for his new iPhone. Have never over the last 8 years paid for the family to go to Alton Towers or Drayton Manor.

9nine · 13/11/2021 20:06

It’s nowhere near as good as it used to be, there used to be so many ‘hacks’ to getting extra points. I used to get 1000 extra points on every online shop, 100’s of extra points for buying various items in store combining offers and then save the points for fab stuff.
We had 2 weeks all inclusive to Majorca for 7 of us and then a week 5* all inclusive to Turkey for 2 of us all for free! And various other things like legoland annual passes, loads of days out, hotels, railcards etc.

Now the deals instore are just the usual offers they used to do but you have to have a club card. And the points are worth hardly anything compared to what they used to be.

XenoBitch · 13/11/2021 20:10

They are pretty pants now tbh. You used to get double or even quadruple points to spend on stuff like tech bought instore, or certain restaurants. The list of places accepting their vouchers has shrank anyway.
Years ago, you used to get air miles I think it was for taking in recycling.

GoodnightGrandma · 13/11/2021 21:53

I don’t get any other emails than confirming my home delivery, and telling me when I can book Xmas/Easter slots

Ive shopped at Tesco and used clubcard since it first came out. Never, ever had a marketing email from them.

I use clubcard points to buy delivery pass and RAC breakdown. Have a lot of unused vouchers though.

minimecantrollerskate · 13/11/2021 22:16

I have a Tesco delivery weekly and have a Tesco MasterCard so get extra points that way.

I use the Clubcard vouchers every year to get a top RAC membership and a Railcard and a magazine subscription.

When DD was little I used them for days out at local places, and also had two free 7 night caravan holidays although I’m not sure you can pay in full any more, this was 10 years ago but it was a great deal back then.

jennymac31 · 13/11/2021 22:23

It's not as good as it used to be but I still get discounts on my shopping and use the clubcard vouchers to cover Legoland tickets and family railcards etc.

BitterTits · 13/11/2021 22:27

I get my delivery pass using clubcard voucher too. We also use it to buy a family and friends railcard every year, occasional meals at Pizza Express and a Eurotunnel crossing once. It's well worth it in my opinion, as these are things we would pay for anyway.

NeonShortsInWinter · 13/11/2021 22:39

We have a Tesco credit card as we used to live near Tesco and the credit card gives you extra clubcard points for spending in Tesco but also less clubcard points for spending elsewhere.

It isn't about what you get in store it is the 3 times voucher value that is where the big deals lie. If you have a £10 voucher and spend it in store it is worth £10 however if you use in with their clubcard partners then you get 3 times the face value so £30. I just got Disney + for 3 months. Cost me nothing except vouchers.

We have paid for hotels in Florida using clubcard vouchers, days out in the UK, restaurants, magazine subscriptions. The credit card is paid off in full every month but we use it for everything we can, so I order through Next and pay using the credit card. We have cash savings but when we bought cars the maximum amount we can put on the credit card goes on it then we transfer the cash to pay it. Same with when we had a new kitchen, we staggered buying stuff so we could put it on the credit card and pay it off in full.

Attach the teeny fob to your keyring and download the Tesco clubcard onto Stowcard where you can upload all of your rewards card such as B&Q, Morrisons etc. That way it is always with you. Info below on all the things you can spend vouchers on under the "get up to 3x the value"

JurgensCakeBaby · 13/11/2021 22:49

We have clubcard plus, £7.99 a month 10% off tesco non food brands am the time and two 10% off a big shop (max £200) each month, I now do two big shops a month rather than 4 equal, with a trip to the greengrocer in between, so even just on my two big shops I save around £40 a month by paying £7.99 that's not including the ten percent on homeware, clothes etc all the time. We also use vouchers for days out to the zoo, Legoland, Warwick castle, Eurostar and so on. So yes I'm tied to Tesco but it's my closest big supermarket anyway and when I tried Aldi I couldn't get everything I need and it didn't really work out much cheaper, we don't really eat processed or low welfare foods so don't buy the cheapest stuff in Aldi anyway, and I was missing out on my points and days out.
