Lacrosse - is it still played?

We used to play lacrosse at school instead of hockey as a treat once every half term. Is it still played at all? Can you get decent but cheap sticks to play. If so where from/ any recommendations? I'm still a bit in shock that my DC had no idea what it was!

The public schools near me play it, or at least the girls do, I don't think I've ever seen the boys playing it.

Cookerhood · 12/11/2021 12:50

There's a club near us just started up. Maybe google local lacrosse clubs or ask on your local fb group. I only ever played lacrosse, I've never played hockey.

TheQueenOfProcrastination · 12/11/2021 12:52

My daughter plays it at school.

I googled "lacrosse clubs"
www.englandlacrosse.co.uk/club-finder

TooLongSinceITravelled · 12/11/2021 13:02

I'm not in England. There seem to be three clubs in the entire country, the closest one is too far to get to and was founded two years ago!
Was toying with the idea of getting the DC sticks and a ball to mess around with, but have no idea where or what to look for. Don't need high quality sticks, something robust.

They play it at my DC’s reasonably posh rural comprehensive but it’s an occasional thing not a full on team sport.

NotMyCat · 12/11/2021 13:08

We played it at school, just looked at they still do it!

mamaoffourdc · 12/11/2021 13:10

My daughter does

Roseandgeranium · 12/11/2021 13:11

As a treat? Good god. I played lax (as we called it) at school and would regard it more as a bitter punishment. All the bad bits of hockey but with the added misery of the more aggressive girls smashing my knuckles during ‘tackles’. Hideous.

parietal · 12/11/2021 13:26

They play it at some old fashioned private girls schools. when I was looking at schools for my DDs, having 'lax' as the main sport was a pretty big negative for me. It is a vicious difficult pointless sport that has no relevance outside that tiny group of schools (and I hated it for a solid 6 years at my schools). At least if the girls play football or tennis, they have some chance of meeting someone who plays the same sport outside school.

eurochick · 12/11/2021 13:30

My daughter is at a prep and just learning it. I went to a state school and have no knowledge of it at all.

QueryA · 12/11/2021 13:35

Bizarrely my kids have just had a block of it at my very normal state primary school in central belt Scotland! I was a bit surprised as it’s not a sport I’ve come across outside private schools. I would have been less surprised at shinty. The kids quite enjoyed it though. Next 6 week block is basketball. They’ve had all sorts in the past, tennis, hockey, golf, cross country. Think the school is trying to expand their experiences

Trickleg · 12/11/2021 13:43

I live in zone 3 south west London and there’s a lacrosse pitch on the Rec ground round the corner. It’s clearly still a thing round here.

Zarene · 12/11/2021 13:48

Tonnes of American men play it in the park near me (London) on a Saturday morning.

Pearlywunzel · 12/11/2021 13:50

Popular sport with both sexes at the Russell group uni round here.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2021 13:55

Totally agree with others, it’s a horrible pointless sport and I hated it for 5 years at my girls private school. They still play it but it’s not the “main sport”. Hated all the girls on the lax team as well. I did love school though! Probably not helpful to your thread though OP sorry.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 12/11/2021 13:55

My school still does, and it was popular at university too. I liked it far more than hockey.

You could look at pop lacrosse sticks if your DC are under 12ish.

KateTheEighth · 12/11/2021 13:57

My son plays it (Y12 state school SW England)

He really enjoys it

I played too but that was decades ago!

Absolutely loved it

dementedpixie · 12/11/2021 13:57

I've only ever read about it in books when I was a child. I've never played it or watched it. I'm in Scotland

Cameleongirl · 12/11/2021 13:58

It's practically a religion on the East Coast US, where I now live. Hugely competitive and people get scholarships to play on university teams.

It's v. regional, though. My DH is from the Mid-West and no one plays it there. I didn't know anyone who played it in the UK.

newtb · 18/06/2023 14:12

All gdst schools used to play and hockey didn't exist.

Smartiepants79 · 18/06/2023 14:14

My daughters school play it.

GlacindaTheTroll · 18/06/2023 14:15

Several universities have lacrosse clubs, so might be worth googling ones near you. They're usually friendly and should be able to point you in the direction of kit suppliers
