14yo son has fuzz on upper lip. Which razor?

Hi everyone! The time has come for our 14yo day to start shaving. He has v dark hair and now has a noticeable shadow of fuzz on his upper lip. I have no idea where to start as me and his DF are separated. Is there an electric razor suitable for sensitive teenage skin? Or is a regular razor better? And if so with what shaving cream?? Help!

Any decent men's razor will do. Gillette are the most popular. I use Mach 3 blades. Any shaving foam or gel will do, you don't need to pay extra for fancy brands.
Make sure he shaves after having a shower as the hair is softer.
Most importantly, if he only has obviously visible hair on his upper lip, make sure that's all he shaves. He may get away without shaving the rest of his face for a year or two.
He'll probably only need to shave his upper lip once a week or fortnight initially.
It may make him feel grown up to be shaving but it quickly turns into a chore.
Maybe buy him some moisturiser as well.

He might find an electric one easier initially- they're dead easy to use. Braun or Phillips do the best ones. It doesn't need to be one of the £150 ones, just a basic model, probably £30-40, but no expensive blades to buy.

Harry razors are really good.

Mach 3 absolutely, and get him a razor stone ( they’re siliconeGrin) to clean it with afterwards. One blade should last him about 6 weeks if he uses it. And get him gel not foam.

idontlikealdi · 12/11/2021 14:37

14?! Just get a Mach Gillette, I'm amazed he he hasn't tried already!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 12/11/2021 14:44

Does he want to shave? Lots of kids that age just love with the fuzz until they decide to do something about it.

DS started off with an electric razor.

CasparsWineBar · 12/11/2021 14:53

Do ask him if he wants to shave though - DS and all his mates (y10) all have upper lip fuzz but don't shave, they say they don't want to yet and it's only the lads with full on moustache and beard type growth that actually shave!

I've never heard of a 'razor stone'. Do you use it to clean the disposable mach 3 blade or sharpen it? Googling seems to find ones for sharpening razors but I doubt you could do that with a disposable blade.
Do you have a link?

My 14 y o is 15 soon, has some darker upper lip hair, but he and his friends who have similar don't shave it.

iklboo · 12/11/2021 15:07

YY to Harry's or grümm. They quite often to 'taster' packs so you can try them out first for about £5. DS is 16 now and wants / needs to shave at least once a week.

statetrooperstacey · 13/11/2021 12:02

DevilWaresPrada, it’s this one it’s £20 but it extends the life of disposable blades about 4 times longer. I’ve used one for 2 years now and you can keep your razor on it in a little slot. Just wet the sharpener and add a bit of shower hell on and run the razor over it a couple of times and they’re like new! I was a thrilled because blades are bloody expensive !

Interesting. I'm still a bit sceptical but it does seem to get good reviews on a few different sites.

SirChenjins · 13/11/2021 12:58

DS14 uses a Harry razor with Nivea sensitive shaving gel and Harry’s moisturiser on his top lip which seems to work well - he only does it about once a month when he wants to

statetrooperstacey · 13/11/2021 12:58

Well I can tell you it works👍😁 you know the little ‘ lubrications strip ‘ most blades have on the top of them ? Well that’s what coats the blades in gunge , that and shaving gell, skin debris etc. The sharpener basically cleans them really well leaving them like new. A colleague recommended it to me and I now use it and bought 4 more for Xmas presents, they were well received .

They get facial hair at different ages you know! DS is 15 and a half and only has light coloured fuzz, he isn't bothered about shaving it yet. I'll add what he needs to his stocking for when he wants to start.
TSSDNCOP · 13/11/2021 18:47

I was invited to stroke DS's face just the other evening for signs of beard. It was a Very Serious moment. We agreed to watch and wait a bit. I plan to get him a Harry's set on the recommendation of older teen boys I know.

dementedpixie · 13/11/2021 18:48

My ds uses an electric shaver

kowari · 19/11/2021 17:57

I got DS the Harry's trial offer to put in his stocking it was £3.95 postage then they will send me another 8 blades for £14 on subscription in a couple of weeks. I have a trial pack invite code if anyone is interested, we both get £5 off. harrys.com/invite/qcyj94
