Why do so many TV dramas start off well then degenerate into a wet fart?

Latest is Close To Me. Ridiculous. The Tower also ended ridiculously.

DUPED into watching stuff with good first episodes and then FORCED to watch them through because I have no life til the soggy arsed end. Or am I just fussy?

@Pippi1970

The Queens Gambit was overrated imo. Really sagged in the middle.
I agree! Was so bored I gave up after episode 3 or 4.
ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:18

I really enjoyed the Queens Gambit.

The undoing with Hugh grant was very good

ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:20

I thought The Chestnut Man was brilliant, probably the best series I've seen all year.

i thought the acting really let it down

mind hunter is very good

Pippi1970 · 13/11/2021 12:23

The plot of the Chestnut Man was proposterous.

ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:24

I do think it's motivated by money though & the need for new content & to string out shows.

ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:25

the netflix one about the love match or something was also stupid.

DevilWaresPrada · 13/11/2021 12:32

"The plot of the Chestnut Man was proposterous"
You could probably say that about a huge number of TV series.
Most scandi noir series follow a similar pattern. As long as everything hangs together logically and loose ends are tied up cleverly then people who enjoy this genre are happy.

I love the genre. The plot was absolutely absurd and made no sense.

Agree with this! What I thought was fantastic and really unusual about mindhunter is all the episodes are different lengths. One might be 30 minutes and another is an hour and a half. They didn’t try and pull things out to fit a Netflix 55 minute running time, they used the time they needed to get this episode done.

Also they didn’t try to churn out more episodes than they needed. The man who played Ed Kemper was horribly good because he made the character likeable. You could totally see how everyone was pally with him.

ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:55

@Pippi1970 I agree the plot was stupid

ronfa · 13/11/2021 12:55

I love scandi noir hence why i was so disappointed

The recent Stephen Graham drama about the friendship between A troubled care assistant and young dementia suffer set against the backdrop of the pandemic it was really moving, and then towards the end it basically became a long rant against the failures of the government. I'd have rather found out more about the backstory and what was going on between Jodi's character and her dad.

@prampushingdownthehighst

I watched The Sopranos through lockdown and to be honest nothing will ever come near that again, I just know I will be disappointed
It is awesome I watched it ahead of the MSON film for the third time but could hardly remember anything - just seeing it again retrospectively makes you realise just how exceptional it is, and the black humour is brilliant (the talking sopranos podcasts give so much insight as well) Best series ever IMO Spoiled me for anything else
Helocariad · 13/11/2021 13:33

@AnnaMagnani

Killing Eve managed half a season, just about held it together for the end. After that - running on fumes.

I May Destroy You was a rare thing that got better as it went on and again the ending was really powerful.

Not watched I May Destroy You yet but it's next on my list.

@froggy1811

Does anybody remember the demise of Dexter? I should have stopped watching when the story line was that Deb was in love with her own darn brother! 😡 After that, I thought things couldn't get any worse....enter the finale! 😱
I am rewatching it ! Just started season 4 may avoid the last one /two though I wanted to refresh before ‘New Blood’

Wow, so glad I ditched Close To Me and watched Happy Valley instead yesterday - great writing. Such a shame as I love Christopher Eccleston but binged the whole of S1 of HV yesterday and probably going to do the same with S2 today

jewel1968 · 14/11/2021 18:28

I watched Mare of Eastown and really like it. I then watched Happy Valley and was struck by how much Mare borrowed from HV. If you like HV you will like Mare (on sky or Now).

Pippi1970 · 14/11/2021 18:29

Mare was good!
