Period blood staining bed

Player456 · 10/11/2021 21:14

My DD has started her periods, only twice so far. Both times she was heavy enough to leak through both pads and period pants.

She is only just 11 and is not interested in tampons.

What can I put on her bed to protect her new mattress?

She hated the plastic backed terry sheets that she had when she was younger.

I've seen some sort of washable pad things that you can put on the middle of the sheet. But was wondering if a folded towel would do?

You can get non-rustling waterproof mattress protectors from a variety of shops. We got ours from John Lewis but lots of places sell them and there are definitely old threads on here where people have recommended various brands.

musicalfrog · 10/11/2021 21:25

Could you offer her some period pants? To wear along with a pad at night.

delilahbucket · 10/11/2021 21:28

A folded towel will work but I can't imagine it will be very comfy to sleep on. You could try her taking ibuprofen during her period which will reduce her flow.

What about a waterproof cover under a mattress protector you can get mattress protectors quite cheap (about £10) then just have dark or patterned bedding.

WotcherH2 · 10/11/2021 21:29

I have heavy periods so I have a non rustling mattress protector, along with a kylie (this type of thing - Washable Bed Protector/Pad with Tucks - Pack of 2 amazon.co.uk/dp/B008645BP6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QFQYZB1GH63EHHP3YY94)]] and then a sheet over the top. Haven’t had any problems with that combination!

HotPenguin · 10/11/2021 21:29

Mattress protectors are miles better now than they used to be, they aren't plasticy and horrible any more.

titchy · 10/11/2021 21:30

We just use normal mattress toppers.
Thin ones are enough to stop the mattress staining and washable.

WhatIsThisPlease · 10/11/2021 21:30

Waterproof mattress protectors are much better now. They don't rustle - and feel more like a normal sheet. Maybe put a big bath sheet down too?

darklamps · 10/11/2021 21:30

Modibodi do period shorts - they could help?

frazzledasarock · 10/11/2021 21:30

A waterproof mattress protector my DC’s is soft and doesn’t rustle you can’t tell it’s a waterproof protector, and a disposable bed pad on top of that and bed sheet over that.

honeylemonteaforme · 10/11/2021 21:31

Ikea

Ikea Go Kart mattress protector and some Primark period pants.

RuperttheBearHug · 10/11/2021 21:35

I don’t know if it helps but I don’t do tampons and have struggled with this my since I started. A few months ago I just started putting a thin wedge of loo roll horizontally in between my bum cheeks and it’s no longer an issue. The paper absorbs anything that leaks!

Thatsplentyjack · 10/11/2021 21:36

I leak all the time at night. I've got one of the Teddy mattress toppers. Usually about 25 pounds. They are thick so shouldn't go all the way through to the mattress. Mine is fine, they are really comfortable to lie on and they wash well and don't take too long to dry.

mumwon · 10/11/2021 21:36

Wear 2 night time or maternity sts & period pants & another pair of pants on top (perimenopause long ago thank goodness)
towel under sheet across bed or on top of sheet
or get flat flannelette sheet & fold doubled up across bed
there are continent tissue bed pads with plastic back but they are not comfortable

mumwon · 10/11/2021 21:37

& have bath just before bed

GoodnightGrandma · 10/11/2021 21:38

How about a Pampers bed mat under the sheet. They aren’t sweaty.

winniesanderson · 10/11/2021 21:40

The kylie type mattress protectors mentioned by a pp are brilliant. I've also heard great things about the period pants shorts style. I think it was cheeky wipes or modibodi that did a higher level absorbency in the shorts style.

2bazookas · 10/11/2021 21:42

You can get far better modern waterproof mattress covers nowadays.
All our beds have a fitted waterproof cover on the mattress, then a fitted quilted cotton mattress cover, then a fitted cotton bottom sheet. No leaks, no mattress stains, silent and totally comfortable.

Assssssssssss · 10/11/2021 21:42

She mentioned this

MushMonster · 10/11/2021 21:43

Mattress cover and towell will do the trick.
I would go with a large bath towel so it is not uncomfortable for her.
Also large night pads. I do find that at hight, more than the fow, it is the angle, so longer pads help a lot.
Myself, I use two pairs of knickers, to hold pad properly in place. This way I have no issues.

This is what I use! Pampers change mat! www.ocado.com/products/pampers-change-mats-19728011?ULP_CAMPAIGN_ID=118&ds_rl=1291528&ds_rl=1291426&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI37y5i-OO9AIV_IBQBh1k_wBmEAQYAiABEgJsE_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Soak and sleep do some lovely waterproof protectors which are not rustly. Also try period pants for nighttime and maybe give her some spatone to help iron levels. This may help with the heavy periods.
