Period blood staining bed

Player456 · 10/11/2021 21:14

My DD has started her periods, only twice so far. Both times she was heavy enough to leak through both pads and period pants.

She is only just 11 and is not interested in tampons.

What can I put on her bed to protect her new mattress?

She hated the plastic backed terry sheets that she had when she was younger.

I've seen some sort of washable pad things that you can put on the middle of the sheet. But was wondering if a folded towel would do?

Which pads does she use? Does she use the long extra absorbent night time pads? Could she wear period pants and a night time pad?

Iggly · 10/11/2021 21:54

Also I was taught not to wear tampons overnight?

SunsetSmartmeter · 10/11/2021 21:55

Clevamama make fabulous mattress protectors, supposedly for kids but they go up to super king, I have them on all beds. Fully washable & they're so light you don't even know they're there.

My daughter uses a dark coloured thick beach towel.

Oldmrswasherwoman · 10/11/2021 21:57

Double up on pants and pads. (and a mooncup if she can face it). Second the ibuprofen to reduce the flow overnight and while at school if this is a problem. Hope it settles for her soon.

hedgehogger1 · 10/11/2021 21:59

Get some night time pads from honouryourflow. I used to leak at night sometimes but not wearing these! Got some for my daughter too. She's happy with them :)

I just have a quilted mattress protector on my bed for the same reason although I’m peri menopause so opposite end of the scale. I’ve never had anything go through to the mattress.

AliceMcK · 10/11/2021 22:02

A regular mattress protector should be fine or even 2 if your worried. I regularly leak even as an adult and these work fine. My DDs currently have a thick fleece blanket on their bed (the mattress needs replacing) something like this will work too.

Northernsoullover · 10/11/2021 22:03

Its already been said many times but mattress protectors have definitely moved on. My old mattress was horrific, split tea, blood and Lord knows what else. I've used a waterproof protector ever since despite the only risk these days being from tea only (sigh).

To get the stains out, peroxide will work.
Then look into period pants as an extra layer of protection.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2021 22:09

Our terry waterproof mattress protecter is silent.

Timeisavirtue · 10/11/2021 22:16

I used to do a folded towel but one day I forgot and I noticed our general mattress protector stopped it going any further so I stopped using a towel and just use the mattress protector. It’s not a waterproof one but seems to do the trick.

ponkydonkey · 10/11/2021 22:22

Yes but how the hell do you get it out of the dheets? I've ruined 3 lovely sheets
Can't get the stains out

Hydrogen Peroxide 3% is great for blood stains.
Themilkyway88 · 10/11/2021 22:28

There are some teen period pants on Amazon, I think the brand name is innersey or something similar like that.

Lorw · 10/11/2021 22:32

Are the period pants for heavy night flow? There are some excellent ones meant for overnight.

Waterproof mattress protectors have definitely moved on, I’ve got one for my bed because I’m partial to a cuppa in bed and I’m clumsy 😂

icelollycraving · 10/11/2021 22:35

Pampers mat and a soft mattress protector. That seems a very heavy period for such a young girl, poor thing.

Cold salt water
BritInAus · 10/11/2021 22:41

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

Was she wearing both pads and period pants together and she still leaked through both?

That seems very heavy for an 11 year old. I wonder if she should see a doctor.

This! Rather than treat the blood staining etc, I'd get her checked out - that sounds extremely heavy.
GrrrlPwr · 10/11/2021 22:43

To get blood stains out rinse out in very cold water. Rub salt onto the wetted area. Leave for an hour. Rinse off with more cold water. Then wash with daz in the washing machine

Triffid1 · 10/11/2021 22:44

Agree with PP who say the leaking seems excessive. Is she wearing the absolute max absorbency period pants? I'm always quite surprised at the massive difference in effectiveness of the various period pants I have. I know only sleep in the modibodi max absorption ones or the modbodi max absorption sleep shorts.

GrrrlPwr · 10/11/2021 22:44

And she will need iron supplements. Look for chelated iron, it won't cause tummy upset

GumsAndTeeth · 10/11/2021 22:45

Bed mats or incontinence bed sheets - after my baby was born I was bleeding terrible, they saved my mattress!

INeedNewShoes · 10/11/2021 22:45

This might do the job:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XWB9ZRX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&ie=UTF8

They're very waterproof so would definitely protect the mattress and they don't have that horrible plasticky feel that other similar products do,
