Help me please! Christmas present idea for 4 year old who doesn't play with toys!

My DD is almost 5 and doesn't really play with toys as such. She either loves doing roleplay (she has lots of dressing up clothes, nurse set, fireman set etc etc) or drawing/colouring. I want to get her something she will like for Christmas but also thats a 'gift' instead of just paper and pens which we replace regularly. She loves disney etc but we have given her playsets before and she just doesn't really play with them.

Does anyone have a craft/drawing based gift idea or perhaps any other ideas of kids who don't play with toys?! I was a real barbie/polly pocket fan but she just isnt interested (which is fine obviously!). I want to get her something which she will be excited to open! She's very active, loves being outdoors but quite independent in her play.

Thanks.

Spirograph? (She may be a bit young)

Have you tried her with lego, & hamma beads?

BrieAndChilli · 10/11/2021 16:04

when DD was that age we got her a desk. we filled it with craft and art supplies. it meant she had her own little place to do all her art etc.

Do you have duplo? My DD doesn’t play with toys, but give her some duplo or those magnet squares and she’ll play for ages building and rebuilding. She loves crafts so the water based colouring sets are a massive hit with her (and with my sofa, she doesn’t believe in keeping her art merely to paper!), as is the aqua doodle mat.

How about a pop up play tent, and some role play accessories? A small wheelie case to put role play pieces in. An easel ? A cardboard wendyhouse that can be coloured in ? Outdoor has she a tuff tray with some accessories ? An outdoor puddle kit - waterproofs with a theme and the toys to play out ? An over the bed tent with a super cute nightlight?

I was going to suggest Hama beads is a good present for that age group. Good for building fine motor skills too.

Have you tried her with lego/lego friends set before?

WhatonEarth1 · 10/11/2021 17:48

Melissa and Doug stamps
Wooden bead bracelet kit
Room projector
Money box
Colour changing umbrella

Keiki · 10/11/2021 18:17

My similar DC enjoys:
Aqua beads
Rainbow scratch art
Jewellery making kit
Puzzles and board games
Has she got a decent toy kitchen to role play with?

0verth1inker · 10/11/2021 19:34

Thanks all for the suggestions!
@Keiki she does :) the scratch art is a good idea!
Hama beads sounds good- she got aqua beads for her birthday which she liked although found the fiddliness frustrating!

I did think about a Spirograph but looking at reviews it looks for slightly older kids as there is a knack to it? Definitely something for future!

Keep em coming :)

Den kit?

Keiki · 10/11/2021 19:54

Kids explorer kit from amazon or make up your own.

A580Hojas · 10/11/2021 19:57

There's a fantastic Christmas topic on here! Have a browse, I'm sure you'll find loads of ideas.

AliceAldridge · 10/11/2021 19:59

My DD was the same.

But she loved:
Doctor's kit
Dress up
Bags
Easel/paints
Play kitchen/plastic food
Play pushchair
Play doh

AliceAldridge · 10/11/2021 20:00

Oh, and later she loved a den building kit.

wouldukissafrog · 10/11/2021 20:02

How about a yoto player and some stories? My DD4 loves to listen to hers whilst colouring and crafting

Nobranothanks · 10/11/2021 20:06

What about one of those cardboard colour in playhouses?

nousernamehere01 · 10/11/2021 20:09

By toys what sort do you mean? I'd be inclined to go for an open ended type "toy" or item that encourages creativity like some Connetix tiles or more art supplies that you know she will love!
That or something to do with her being outside like a nice new set of weeklies and raincoat!

Stapler, hole punch, good torch or headtorch, learn to knit or crochet?

0verth1inker · 10/11/2021 21:21

It sounds like she does like toys - just not small world type types.

My dds both loved the tracing pad given by a pp, also aquabeads, blopens, a neon glowpad, polymer clay.

If she likes nurse/doctor roleplay then a real stethoscope is pretty cheap. We made our own doctor's kit with cheap real plasters, real syringes (obviously no needles), tubigrip, triangular bandages, reflex hammer etc. Even added some tictacs for tablets every so often. It got used for years.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/11/2021 22:11

So glad it’s not just my eldest girl then- not a toy player just likes drawing pics, singing and dancing to YouTube and going to parks.
We have lots of little things this year: books, a Ben and holly wand, a grew your own plant peppa pig pot, some hair bits, stickers …..
