After an adulthood of working full time (thus far), I'm due to go on maternity leave soon. Huzzah!

I was looking forward to watching daytime trash but everything looks a bit rubbish. It's either Lorraine or Loose Women type stuff (bleh) or Cash in the Attic nonsense.

Back in my student days, we had a plethora of chat shows to watch. Jerry springer, Rikki Lake, Montel, Jenny Jones, Jeremy Kyle, etc etc.

I know they were all exploitative as fuck and have no place in the modern world blah blah. But honestly, what am I supposed to watch in a half vegetative state now that they've disappeared off the schedules? 🤔

Can we work up a list of trash for my Maternity Leave? What's your favourite TV floss?

I'm exposing my secret shame here but with a Hayu subscription they have absolutely loads of old Jerry Springer episodes, plus the joy of multiple Real Housewives and Below Deck. Just don't blame me if you become obsessed!

Turtles25 · 10/11/2021 12:03

I loved JK while on maternity leave! So I feel for you.
Both my kids are at school now and all I seem to do is watch Friends. Grin I do have a job by the way. Just not during the week or day

You need Netflix, Prime and Disney +.
You'll never be bored again.
I can recommend a lot of programmes.
let me know if you want some extensive lists.

I always hop between channels & programmes (thanks ADHD), so currently I'm jumping between Elementary & 30 rock on Prime, Mindy Project, Scrubs & several filmes on Disney + and Community, The Ranch, The Movies that made us and Glee on Netflix.
some are new, some I've seen before

@ifherbumwereabungalow I need to get onto that. Sounds like the kind of trash I need in my life. I've never watched any of the real housewives programmes but I think I'm going to watch the heck out of those.

Ooh yes please @ZingDramaQueenOfSheba

I actually have all of those subscriptions but of an evening, my partner is Mr Remote Control so all of our algorithms are based around manly, man stuff. I don't have to patience to dig into things myself so I just tolerate his obsession/the algorithm's obsession with gold mining reality TV, and Forged in Fire.

@OrangeJuiceAndNoodles

🤣🤣 at manly algorithms!

you know you can just set up your own little world, then you don't have to put up with his shenanigans!

Yes, I'm Mrs Mummy😁

What kind of stiff do you like?
I mainly watch comedy (Modern family, Brooklyn 99, Scrubs, The Office, Parks & Rec) and any kind of whodunnit, crime/action, "puzzles with a twist" kinda stuff like Money Heist or How to Get away with Murder.
Legal /courtroom dramas are good too : Damages, The Good Wife, Scandal
I also like the premise of a naughty genius who plays outside of societies rigid rules but because they solve stuff they are always forgiven (House, Mentalist, White Collar, Lie to me).

I don't care much for zombie/vampire/LOTR type stuff but you can find those too.

Pick a chanel then start a thread so people can recommend you stuff based on your likes. But you can always PM if you need help with the genres I like x

I miss Jeremy Kyle 😱

UnitedRoad · 10/11/2021 14:34

I miss Jeremy Kyle. I used series link it to record, and watch when I couldn’t sleep.

I feel bad saying it but I really miss it

ifherbumwereabungalow · 10/11/2021 15:28

I suggest starting your journey with New Jersey and Beverley Hills, then come back and I will be happy to discuss Teresa Giudice and the Erica Girardi saga until the cows come home!

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 10/11/2021 16:28

What do I like..... Hmmmm. Things I've enjoyed:

Bodged plastic surgery programmes
Russian Doll
Sex and the City (just for the nostalgia)
Married at First sight
Arrested Development
Tiger King
Murder docus
Makeover shows
Come Dine with Me

That probably gives you a good idea of my taste.

I miss Jeremy Kyle too Confused I never thought I'd say that. But I used to love skiving off lectures and watching some people screaming at each other instead. Grin

I adored Real Housewives while I was on maternity.

It's been so long since I've watched it though, I wouldn't recognise anyone now. I must be several surgeries behind.

VelvetThunder · 10/11/2021 16:39

So last year, lockdowns and maternity leave meant that I too needed new trash to binge. We had the free year of discovery+ and so I went down the 90day fiance rabbit hole and then love/life after lock up when I eventually ran out of content.
I feel that's all the trash you need to keep you going for a while 😁

HappyGirl86 · 10/11/2021 16:43

Oh I loved Montel and Maury.

I like to watch all the cheesy reality shows now.

OrangeJuiceAndNoodles · 10/11/2021 20:17

90day fiance

I don't know what that is but it already sounds up my alley.

I love Don't tell the Bride and Catfish, stuff like that. I shouldve put them on my list earlier. I like watching stupid people make bad decisions.

OP posts:
VelvetThunder · 11/11/2021 10:20

Ah well, if you love bad decisions, 90 day is definitely the show for you! And it has so many seasons and spin offs you'll be busy for ages!
I love catfish too. It sounds like we have similar tastes.

EscapeTheCastle · 11/11/2021 11:33

oh gosh yes, 90 day fiancé and all the spin offs (wiki tells me there are 16!?) are just incredible. People making bad decisions? You will be spoilt for choice.

My personal fav is, "Before the 90 days" when the American person visits their beloved, or sometimes fake catfish in their home country and you get a real insight into how people live.

The series I was watching for free went to the paid subscription mid series and I nearly had a tantrum. I had to bite the bullet and pay up.

There's so many spins offs that I wont know where to pick up when I subscribe again.
