Is this quote for laying cork flooring too high?

It's for one bedroom, not big, not tiny. Includes removing and disposing of carpet, remove and reinstall skirting boards and lay cork flooring (comes in long tiles that slot in, like floor boards). Got a quote of £500. Can't tell anymore, everything is so expensive... But do you think it's a bit steep?
Thanks so much

Does that include the materials too? It doesn't sound too extortionate to me.

LaCerbiatta · 09/11/2021 16:22

No, doesn't include the floor tiles

If you factor in the cost per m² of the flooring itself, plus underlay, preparation, removal and disposal and add the fitters day rate on top I don't think it's that bad really.

Also no underlay

Ask them to break it down, or get another quote and see how they compare.

LaCerbiatta · 09/11/2021 16:25

We've been trying for months to find someone, this is the only quote we have. I wish we had a second option to compare 🙁

Not sure there's anything to break down really, it's just hourly rate as no materials included

Firms that actually have a licence for waste disposal will have big overheads for that element of the service due to the costs of landfill these days. Suspect if you found anyone much cheaper they might be doing fly tipping.
Ask for quote breakdown so you can see. Always get another quote anyway.
If you could remove carpet and skirting boards and take them to your local tip yourself you would probably save a good chunk of that quoted cost.

UpThePodge · 09/11/2021 16:32

Not big but not tiny doesn't tell us anything really, disposing of carpet is expensive too
If you don't want to pay it its fine but I'm not quite sure how we can help with the info you've given
It's like saying is this pair of shoes too expensive, it's what they are charging
Sorry if that sounds rude

Then it's worth it. Waste disposal is a much bigger element than it ever used to be its not just labour. Skilled floor fitters aren't cheap but are worth it, there is a skills shortage in that field. You don't want your lovely cork badly laid. I'd take the quote, have you checked the workmanship is guaranteed?
LaCerbiatta · 09/11/2021 17:17

Never said I didn't want to pay! Yes a bit unnecessarily rude....
Not big not tiny means a standard double room. Can go and measure but not sure exact square footage will make that much difference to my question.

Thanks all re costs of disposal, was not aware.

🙄 If you don't want to pay that much..... Jesus.....

ChequerBoard · 09/11/2021 18:51

It sounds like a faff of a job and you have said yourself no-one else has wanted to quote. He's given you a high price because he's not that keen on doing the work.

LaCerbiatta · 09/11/2021 19:01

Never said I didn't want to pay that much, just wanted to know if the quote was fair. But thanks
