  • when DS1 turned 18
  • grunting when getting out of bed or armchair
  • you need to add year of birth on an online form and the damn counter is just spinning and spinning

I can't just get straight up from sitting on the floor any more. It's about an 8 point manoeuvre, complete with noises and sometimes swearing.

NigellaSeed · 09/11/2021 11:36

When I thought, there are no other young people in my village, because they must all be at uni - then I realized I am 32 and not "one of them" 😭

@ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba

My oldest child turned 50. My mother always used to say that it was not her birthdays that made her feel older; it was her children's. I now fully understand what she means.

But I am at an age where I'm quite happy with growing older, except for the fact that time seems to move much faster.

Looking through the CVs of job applicants and seeing that they were nearly all born this century and already have a Bachelors degree ...

aConcernedPrude · 09/11/2021 14:04

When I get the name wrong of a young, current celebrity and DD rolls her eyes at me.

I remember I used to find this hilarious when it happened to me, for example my granny would said Harry Barlow instead of Gary Barlow. Now I'm the one who is completely out of touch Sad

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 09/11/2021 14:08

Weve realised our children have no concept in waiting a week for the next episode of something. They prefer to wait a few weeks so they can watch a few at a time. As for watching something at a designated time...

HeronLanyon · 09/11/2021 14:16

When I say totally unthinkingly that I was doing criminal cases before the internet and using eg actual hardback medical dictionaries to find out what a partic condition was.
Early advices and appeals were sent out to a typist in handwritten form.

Or all pre mobile stuff.
When someone In their 60s is described as ‘elderly’ or a ‘pensioner’ when news story clearly written by young whippersnapper.
Use of ‘whippersnapper’

Sparklfairy · 09/11/2021 14:22

@Aroundtheworldin80moves oh yes! My DM watched the original dynasty and I'm hooked on the reboot. I said I hadn't got anything productive done because the cliffhangers were too cliffhangy and I simply had to keep watching. She sighed and said, "in MY day we had to wait till next week!" Grin

gamerchick · 09/11/2021 14:27

@Sparklfairy

mentions of VHS & casette tape

I saw a video recently where kids of about 10/12 were handed a cassette and a walkman. They had no idea what it was or what to do with it. When one finally got the cassette in the walkman and it started to play, they were really put out and bewildered that you couldn't shuffle through the songs Grin

It was the giving teens a rotary phone and asking them to make a phone call here. Grin

Phoned my mobile provider this morning and they asked for date of birth and said "for example if you were born on 1st January 1990, enter 010190" - my first thought was what a ridiculous example, someone that young can't have a mobile contract!!

Raffles1981 · 09/11/2021 14:48

Was talking with a 19 year old colleague about 9/11 and how I didn't find out until I walked through the front door and saw it on TV. Young colleague couldn't fathom that there was no social media, apps to read about it on the way home Confused

TopTabby · 09/11/2021 14:53

My child examining her grandparent's old chequebook as though it were a holy ancient artefact.
Ha ha, yes! My dd actually received a cheque from dgps for her 18th birthday & had no idea what to do with it.
I felt a right old dinosaur paying it into the bank & may have mentioned it was nothing to do with me! My attempt at acting cool backfired though when I had to put my glasses on to fill in the paying in slip which promptly steamed up so I couldn't see a thing.
I felt even older when the kind staff member (who looked about 12) informed me of the date & how to use the machine. I already knew but didn't tell him as I knew I'd sound like my own dm!

ratspeaker · 09/11/2021 15:04

When I heard someone saying" did you know the guy who wrote Umbrella Academy used to be in a band"?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/11/2021 15:05

had to explain carbon copy.
they didn't know what carbon paper was or why it was necessary for making copies.

Happy Birthday to your child!

When I read the opening post of this thread and thought of a good example to add. Then read through the other posts and now I can't remember what my idea was....

Realising Brad Pitt is in his 50's I'm always like how did this happen.
Always worth mentioning that Brad Pitt is older than Nigel Farage. Mind you, I’m nearly 70 and always think Farage should be older than I am.

I keep complaining about the shit rap music at the gym. Last time I asked the 25 year old boy guy to play some club music he just looked at me like this Confused I suggested something high tempo like Calvin Harris/David Guetta, he nodded and smiled and played a few Eminem tracks (to humour the old lady...)
