A friend who rents has no heating as it's not working they have hot water. She has 3 kids youngest is 5. Shes been told boiler it's under guarantee so landlord waiting for the company to fix it. So a week today is the first date an engineer can look at it. The house is freezing,! She has some fan heaters but honestly can they leave her like that for a week in November?

I don't know what the law says, but could she check the temperature with a thermometer in each room? Have a read of this. I'd be pushing for it to be fixed sooner, or ask the land lord to provide further plug in heaters in the interim.

This happened to us really recently with a two month old baby. After calling a third time to make a fuss, stating our right to a safe and habitable home, the manager of the lettings company turned up with a bunch of electric heaters. Luckily ours was fixed in around ten days.

There are some template letters around so you can escalate the process.
