Do your legs fit under your dining table?

Because I've just purchased a refurbished dining table and chairs set and my legs barely fit under. Wtaf?! The table has a 13cm plank under the top, that comes down to about 1 inch above thigh. Can't hardly move, certainly couldn't cross legs. But on face value it looks like a totally normal table and chair set up.

Yes. Otherwise it would be madness.

You have yourself a weirdo table. A wable.

BakedTattie · 07/11/2021 19:29

I hate tables like that. I have plenty room under mine as it’s effectively a Piece of wood on top of a huge X (the legs) underneath.

A table like yours would make me feel claustrophobic

No, that's really weird! I'd be thinking they made a mistake with the refurbishment.

I've got a second-hand dining table and (separately purchased) second-hand chairs and I'm aware they're not an ideal fit together as most of the chairs aren't really the right proportion with the table. But it's nothing like what you describe, and it's a problem entirely of my own making (because I bought them in dribs and drabs for cheap). Even so it's annoying enough for me to have the chairs on my list to replace, so I would be really cross if I'd paid for a table and chairs as a set, and they weren't fit for purpose!

Indecisivelurcher · 07/11/2021 19:30

I don't think I can deal with it, or return it. So that's an expensive mistake!!! Ffs

Yogawankonobi · 07/11/2021 19:31

Maybe your chairs are too high? Grin

SarahAndQuack · 07/11/2021 19:31

Why can't you return it?

WakeUpLockie · 07/11/2021 19:31

You need lower chairs I guess. Fucking annoying design though and always makes me feel so fat when I have to sit at those!

Crisispoint21 · 07/11/2021 19:31

That's so wierd! I definately wouldn't fit in that gap, I'm way too fat!

Do the chairs have peculiar long legs?

TSSDNCOP · 07/11/2021 19:31

I would go made sitting at that table. My legs are tensing just looking at it.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 07/11/2021 19:32

You could saw little bits off the legs of the chairs?

Like Mr Twit but in reverse.

TinaYouFatLard · 07/11/2021 19:32

You’ll have to chop a lump off each chair leg 😂

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 07/11/2021 19:32

where did you get it? That's ridiculous!

I guess that's why it was refurbished...someone already had it and rejected it!

BingoandBluey · 07/11/2021 19:33

Can you cut the chair legs a bit shorter?!

SophiesMummySaid · 07/11/2021 19:33

You can get table leg risers, or put castors on it

coogee · 07/11/2021 19:34

Do you have a jigsaw? If so, use it.

Clymene · 07/11/2021 19:36

That table and those chairs aren't friends are they? They hate each other.

They're like furniture in a playmobil house

ViceLikeBlip · 07/11/2021 19:36

My table you can your legs under along the sides, but not at the head of the table, but I only discovered this once we were on about child number 3 or 4, because we'd never used the ends of the table before then!

Indecisivelurcher · 07/11/2021 19:37

Thought of that but actually the table is quite high, so I tried a lower chair under it and the table is comically high!

My parents and parents in law have SO MANY things like this

  • dining table chairs which have a weird ridge under the bum which are really hard and uncomfortable to sit on
  • small double beds which have big planks of wood down the side so you can’t sit on the side of the bed or hang your knee over the edge comfortably

Etc etc. The whole house feels vaguely like torture to visit

Meredusoleil · 07/11/2021 19:38

Indecisivelurcher · 07/11/2021 19:39

I got it on ebay. I'm screwed aren't I... It was £450 as well. I wanted to get something nice.

About to message the seller.

"Hello, what is your return policy please? Unfortunately we are unhappy with the table and chairs due to the extremely small 7cm gap between the plank that sits below the tables top and the chairs. This makes is very difficult to sit at the table with chair tucked in and move legs."

OP posts:
SarahAndQuack · 07/11/2021 19:41

I think even on ebay you have ordinary consumer rights? 450 isn't bargain basement! Is the seller an individual, or a company that also trades elsewhere? I buy all my furniture second hand and I know a lot of ebay sellers are actual businesses rather than individuals.

msgreen · 07/11/2021 19:42

Put blocks or casters on the table ,its a problem with vintage stuff
normally drives me nuts
