How do you pronounce...?

Feedingthebirds1 · 07/11/2021 17:57

I just fell down an internet rabbit hole and found this - how to pronounce various brand names. I like to think I get things right, but there were a few which caught me out. And sometimes we have 'how do you pronounce...?' threads.

How would you do?

I found out after a year or so that my DSs were calling their good friend Random. His name was Brandon. Confused

Some of those I’m not sure need explaining. Does anyone pronounce Chevrolet with a t at the end?

IloveJudgeJudy · 07/11/2021 18:11

I read that and disagree on the pronunciation of some of them. Also, and this is a beef of mine. How do you pronounce Paris? I say Paris, but according to the rules of that website I should be saying Paree. Don't get me started on the English pronunciation of Porsche! I speak German but when I'm speaking English I say Porsh. No uh at the end.

Rant over Grin

Uniqlo got me!

I felt some of them were a bit OTT, but you never know.

I think that’s a good point about what foreign words do we pronounce as they are said in that language, and what do we pronounce in an English way. If, as an English person speaking English, you pronounce Chevrolet with a t sound at the end you sound a bit silly, but if you insisted on pronouncing Paris Paree, you sound a bit pretentious.
iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 18:25

Basically it's saying 'you're a thick bunch of plebs who no nothing'. When I pronounce most of them properly, or at least the accepted norm / anglicised version in common use.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2021 18:27

Fortunately I have no need to pronounce most of the luxe brands in that list.

SirenSays · 07/11/2021 18:27

The one I always get wrong is Moschino which is apparently Moss-key-no.

debwong · 07/11/2021 18:28

I'm going to take a wild and offensive guess and say this article was probably aimed at Americans.

If they've never heard it and only read it, then I can see why they might.
iklboogiemaninthecloset · 07/11/2021 18:50

My thoughts exactly @debwong - they might not be familiar with some of the brands and some (by no means all) pronounce words exactly as they're written.

I agree. Unless you're speaking in another language, the commonly accepted English pronunciation is fine.

I thought it was mos-sheen-o but never have a reason to say it because I don't like the brand so I'll continue to say it incorrectly in my head Grin

If you don’t pronounce Paris as Paree.
How would you pronounce Lyons, Nice or Le Mans.

Angel2702 · 07/11/2021 19:22

I disagree with Sega, the advert growing up was “do me a favour, plug me into a Say-ga” not see-ga.

crosshatching · 07/11/2021 19:24

French people mostly call London Londres, though, Paris pronounced Pa-riss happens to be the English term for the city, it's fine to use it. We don't commonly refer to Munich as München?

SickAndTiredAgain · 07/11/2021 19:25

True but that was my point about it being interesting which words get anglicised and which don’t. I don’t know anyone British who would pronounce it Paree, but I also don’t know anyone who would rhyme Nice with rice.
ColinTheKoala · 07/11/2021 19:26

Lidl. I always say Leedel as the Germans would, but even Lidl themselves say Liddle in the UK ;)

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 07/11/2021 19:31

I only found out yesterday that the drink BELVOIR is pronounced BEEVER
Moet et chandon had always been MO -ET not mow-ay ,I correct others 😂
Ralph lauren is Ralph Lauren. Like lauren the girls name not LOR - EN
He even corrects people
My friend called her dog LO-REN after ralph Lauren .. she weren't having it that it was pronounced the same as the girls name

DahliaMacNamara · 07/11/2021 19:32

What the fuck was that with Cartier? Cat-ee-air? Hmmm.
And who says Ama-zohn?

ErrolTheDragon · 07/11/2021 19:36

There are quite a lot of US placenames brits wouldn't pronounce as the locals do - ones which are also British. I used to have enormous difficulty getting taxi drivers to take me to Waltham MA until I affected a drawl.Grin

SpamIAm · 07/11/2021 19:38

You'd mostly sound like a twat if you pronounced them as that article suggests. Nootella indeed.

SpamIAm · 07/11/2021 19:39

Is it a french brand? Sounds a bit like that in a french accent, but I'm not french so I'll stick with Cartier. Not that it comes up in conversation often.
DahliaMacNamara · 07/11/2021 19:43

Cartier really doesn't sound like Cat-ee-air with a French accent. Not that I'm likely to be buying it either.
