Best before date on fruit cake....Amazon fuck up! Would you try it anyway?

Soooo about 2 weeks ago I ordered a fruit cake from Amazon that I had last Christmas as a present (yes I know...Amazon are shit but I had a gift card!)
I should add that I am fucking skint as shit and this was supposed to be a little treat for me as my friend bought me some port and Wenslydale to go with it as she know otherwise I'd have just spent it all on stuff for DS.
It's an iced, brandy soaked one.

The first one they sent had a BBD of 25/08/2021, so I complained, and they sent a new one.

The new one also has a date of 25/08/21. Hmm

They have refunded me the credits, so I am not out of pocket, but I won't be ordering this particular cake again obviously!!

My issue is......I now have TWO cakes, they are both wrapped in plastic and in their tins, BUT because they are an alcohol soaked fruit cake, do you reckon it might be worth giving them a go?

Will they be mouldy or horrible and dry??

I know I could just try one but honestly the thought of putting a manky slice of cake in my mouth just makes me heave, so I want opinions before I just throw them away, I hate wasting food!

It’s fruit cake. You could eat it in a decade and it would be fine! Crack on with one, freeze the other if you want it later.

PotteringAlong · 07/11/2021 12:33

Or just bung it in the cupboard and eat it later!

Sunnysal · 07/11/2021 12:34

They will be fine. All the alcohol will have preserved them. Open one and give it a sniff

It's fruit cake I think it's exempt from BBD under the cake rule Hmm

Seriously though back in the mists of time my Nan would make the Christmas cake in spring and keep feeding it brandy until December so it should be fine if you keep feeding it!

Kendodd · 07/11/2021 12:37

I refuse to shop on Amazon.
Sorry, not helpful.

shinynewapple21 · 07/11/2021 12:38

Agree it will be fine .

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 07/11/2021 12:39

Ooh good to know that I can freeze one!
I'm gonna try one in a minute then!
The rational part of me kind of thought it'd be OK, but the part that hates gagging and puking was a bit worried!

If I end up with two free cakes that are edible then I've just basically won right? Grin

You know that people keep fruit wedding cake slices for years for various reasons. What exactly do you think might have happened to an unopened fully packaged one in a couple of months Grin

Hollyhead · 07/11/2021 12:41

Oh god crack on!

Ozanj · 07/11/2021 12:42

Take it out of the plastic put it in a tin and keep feeding it brandy (look up the technique). Best before dates don’t matter anyway only use by dates do.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 07/11/2021 12:42

I do normally not use amazon cos they are shits but my friend sent me a gift card with the express instructions to use it for a treat, so I thought I'd treat myself to the fruit cake I got sent last year!

Honestly I don't know! Grin

After hyperemisis I have a real hatred of puking, so was worried about it making me gag I guess.

Just take it out of the package and try 1 bite.
That will provide you with enough information!

shoofly · 07/11/2021 12:51

I honestly think it'll be grand. I wouldn't be feeding it with extra brandy and I honestly don't know how the icing would behave if frozen but definitely worth a try. The levels of sugar, and alcohol in that kind of cake are a great preservative.
Come back and let us know if it's good.

TheQueef · 07/11/2021 12:52

What kind of psychopath eats only one bite? It's cake!
RozHuntleysLeftHand · 07/11/2021 12:59

Ok.....Just tried a slice.

It was a bit more boozy and a bit more sugary than I remember but absolutely fucking fine!!

I've had such a shit time recently, and 2 free cakes plus the money still to spend has made me very, very fucking happy indeed!!

It might seem like such a small thing, but honestly this has made my week! Grin

That's my evening treat sorted, might spend the bonus money on more port, cos....you know, now I have 2 cakes to eat! Grin

Me when I’m not sure about something Grin @TheQueef. If it turns out to taste fine, the cake will be in my belly in less then 15 minutes probably!

stingofthebutterfly · 07/11/2021 13:05

Fruit cake only gets better as it gets older.

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 07/11/2021 13:05

Honestly I could fucking cry with happiness right now!!

I feel like I've won something! Grin

I love my friend, she's been amazing recently, and I'm loving the fact that complaining has got me TWO free cakes plus the money still to spend!

Really looking forward to snuggling under the blanket later, watching something creepy with candles, cake, port and cheese.

Sometimes it's the little things that get you through the shit times!! Grin

RozHuntleysLeftHand · 07/11/2021 13:09

And yes, you cant just have one bite! What weirdo only has a tiny bite?! [shocked]

I'm not a monster! Grin

I've just had a second slice just to be sure....can confirm was as good as the first.

Yay!

We made a Christmas cake and forgot about it for two years. Then found it and ate it! It was lovely.

MrsFin · 07/11/2021 13:34

Jesus! People keep parts of their wedding cake for the first christening!
I'm usually still eating or Christmas cake well into March.
You'll be fine.

Wotagain · 07/11/2021 13:41

Sherrystrull · 07/11/2021 13:54

KeyLimeFly · 07/11/2021 13:56

Pretty sure some of our wedding cake is hanging around somewhere. We had our third anniversary in the summer!
