Surely nobody in the developed world doesn't know that it's called McDonald's.

I see so often on threads people who call it MacDonald's. How can they not be familiar with the name of what must be the most recognised chain in the world? Is it deliberate, like 'I'm so not the type of person that goes there, I've never noticed what it's called...'? I know it's only one letter out, but come on! It sinks in by osmosis even if you're the kind of person who likes to say you've never eaten there.

I saw it on the Wetherspoons thread too, people spelling it differently to 99.9% of posters. They're literally reading the correct name over and over, and then typing Weatherspoons.

It never happens on the Bowden or Jooles threads 🤔

I would have to think about it and bot sure I'd get it right

Not sure why

I suppose it's something you see a lot but don't have to spell or write down

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/11/2021 20:50

Them Golden Harches, mmmmmmm.

campion · 06/11/2021 20:51

Big Mac. I guess.

SW1amp · 06/11/2021 20:53

So all the people who call it ‘Maccy Ds’ are wrong?

I can’t say I have given much thought to the spelling. If I saw either written down, I would know what someone meant

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 06/11/2021 20:53

Mc is a shortening of the prefix Mac. Lots of names are still in the the original form-MacDonald. So people write what they are used to.

Also- no one actually gives a fuck. So there’s that.

TwinklyBranch · 06/11/2021 20:53

I'm Scottish. I don't have the brain space to remember who's a Mac and who's a Mc, and that includes Ronald!

Sparklingbrook · 06/11/2021 20:55

We call it 'Maccies' in this house.

I sometimes do think people type 'MacDonalds' as an attempt to make out they have no idea what that ghastly place that sells poison is actually called.

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/11/2021 20:55

I probably couldn’t reliably tell you which was right. It’s not seen written down much is it? Usually it’s just the golden M.

Bagadverts · 06/11/2021 20:56

The arches logo is the thing that sticks in my mind and that doesn’t cover Mac or Mc.

Postdatedpandemic · 06/11/2021 20:56

Rachel has it, nobody (not even my spell checker) gives a fuck how it is spelt.

bimbimbap · 06/11/2021 20:57

bowden..!?!?

HBomberGal · 06/11/2021 21:00

Oh god, who cares.
Personally I reckon people get confused because the spelling Mac is in Big Mac, which is synonymous with McDonalds.

RoseAndRose · 06/11/2021 21:03

Many people can't spell Maltesers either

CaptainPovey · 06/11/2021 21:04

Really
Biscuit
Try harder

Yes, I've noticed this too.

I'm not hugely invested in encouraging the nation to swot up on its spelling of brands, I'm just commenting on a fairly common quirk I'd observed. I thought it was interesting.

NoDecentHandlesLeft · 06/11/2021 21:06

I'm not sure I've ever noticed. Just see the arches!

AColdDuncanGoodhew · 06/11/2021 21:08

I call it Micky D's but the Big Mac thing is a good point. I'm going to order a Big Mick next time and see how that goes Grin

SickAndTiredAgain · 06/11/2021 21:08

@bimbimbap

bowden..!?!?
OP was deliberately misspelling Boden and Joules to illustrate the point.

I do think there is a lot of this going on. The same people who say they have never heard of Love Island, Home Bargains or Katie Price.

Most of the McDonald's advertising uses their large M logo.

I'd also dispute the statement that Mac is the original form of Mc. Before most people were literate, they were used interchangeably. On lots of old documents you'll see M'Donald. And everyone with a Mc/Mac surname in Scotland will be used to being asked "Is that Mick or Mack"?

Lemonsyellow · 06/11/2021 21:12

I know it’s McDonald’s, but I’m never sure on Old MacDonald Had A Farm.

Yes all the faux ignorance about stuff as if admitting they'd heard of these things somehow taints them. Grin
