lockdownrainbow · 05/11/2021 19:54

I am scheduled to have both back wisdoms out. My bottom left wisdom is broken has been very painful later.
Other bottom wisdom has a hole in it.
Will i be in more pain after having them removed ?
How long will it take to recover ?

At the dentist or in hospital? At the dentist not too bad. The one at hospital that was impacted was very painful for a day or two.

Jabvribt · 05/11/2021 20:04

I had mine taken out one at a time; first one took 2-3 days recovery although I was back to work on the third day and taking painkillers, second wad impacted so I needed a stitch in my gum and recovery was nearer 5 days. I would get some soft foods in and straws and when you’re home work out your pain relief so you’re taking paracetamol and ibuprofen without too much of a gap in between. I also found that over the counter co-codamol really helped

It depends on how you define "recover".

I had an impacted cracked wisdom tooth and the molar next to it removed a couple of months ago. It hurt for couple days after but wasn't too bad. I actually think the pain I had been suffering from the tooth before removal was worse

Pumpkinsonparade · 05/11/2021 20:07

I had 2 bottom ones removed when I was mid pregnancy.. Managed a cheese sandwich a few hours later!
No issue or pain really.

Whatabanana · 05/11/2021 20:09

It really depends how easily they come out I think. Mine got stuck (just the one) and it was quite an ordeal to get it out. I was popping painkillers for at least a week.

RandomMess · 05/11/2021 20:12

I strongly recommend taking arnica for 48 hours before extraction helps minimise the bruising!

ProcrastinationIsMySuperPower · 05/11/2021 20:15

It's so variable. I had 2 removed in hospital, they were both impacted and had to be broken up to get them out; I couldn't close my jaw or eat solid food for several days, and was very swollen and bruised. I had the third removed at the dentist, it popped out very easily and I was eating and drinking normally by the next day. The fourth was quite a difficult extraction with some additional complications, and unfortunately I ended up with dry socket and lots of pain. I was poorly for a week or so. That's less usual, I think.

HandlebarLadyTash · 05/11/2021 20:17

I got dry socket which hurt like hell but was fine after pills & a few days

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/11/2021 20:18

That's completely "how long is a piece of string". Wisdom teeth extraction can be no worse than a simple extraction of a molar or can be surgery in the sense more commonly associated with other parts of the body - it totally depends upon what's going on with your wisdom teeth. If they're already in place, through the gum, it shouldn't be bad. If they're impacted, at an angle, don't have space to come through, roots entangled, then its a proper operation. Recovery time could be anything from sox hours to six days if you're really unlucky.

D1ngledanglers · 05/11/2021 20:20

I recommend gargling with solpadeine dispersible. I had dry sockets after having 4 out in hospital - very painful. But as PP said, I don't think that's usual

cafesandbookshops · 05/11/2021 20:20

I had two out from the back and I had have them taken out by an endodontist as they were impacted and they had to be broken up. I was expecting the worse but it was over in about 25 mins and I had no major
Issues. Back at work three days later.

Oldhag5 · 05/11/2021 20:21

I had mine out about 25 years ago and I still remember the pain afterwards and being in bed for a week feeling dreadful. Hope you have a better experience

Oldhag5 · 05/11/2021 20:22

I had a general anaesthetic so had the recovery from that as well as being hideously swollen

lockdownrainbow · 05/11/2021 20:23

Meant recovery as in pain levels
I have booked in for a tuesday end of November due to get hair done on the Friday, concert at 02 on the Saturday
Is this doable ?!
I have been in alot of pain for months with broken wisdom on antibiotics and pain killers everyday
Wondering how pain will compare after having them taken out ?

I had all 4 out and was off for a week.

However that was mainly because I looked like a hamster.

Bouledepetanque · 05/11/2021 20:23

A word of warning. The lingual nerve runs very close underneath the bottom wisdom teeth. If it is damaged during the drilling out procedure, as it was for me, you lose sensation in that half of your tongue and your inner gums for years. And you'll be glad you only had one side done at a time.

Wisdom tooth removal is not a minor procedure. It took me weeks to fully recover.

Look up the NICE guidelines . I read afterwards that they don't recommend removal in most cases as the risk of removal carries as much risk as risk of keeping wisdom teeth.

lockdownrainbow · 05/11/2021 20:24

Removal being done at a hospital
Bottom left is more urgent bottom right wisdom has a hole in side but doesn't hurt atall

DH was mostly miserable because he couldn't eat.

LarryUnderwood · 05/11/2021 20:27

Depends. I had back bottom ones out under general anaesthetic and then got dry socket after a day or two. I was knocked out and in terrible pain for around 5 days and ended up off work for a week. I think without the dry socket it would only have been 3-4 days but a GA is no joke amd can wipe you out.

Mackmama · 05/11/2021 20:31

I had an impacted one removed after I had my little boy. I think it was a bit sore when the anaesthetic wore off but nothing I couldn’t fend off with paracetamol and ibuprofen. I remember after a few days, I didn’t feel like it was healing and I started using the medicated mouthwash which really helped but obviously check with your dentist or whoever that that’s okay before you do it. The pain of having it out honestly wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the pain of when I had a hole in my wisdom tooth during my pregnancy and nobody would touch it, I felt like I had a mouthful of burning metal and I’d say it was probably worse than Labour and childbirth!!

SkankingMopoke · 05/11/2021 20:36

I had all 4 out under a GA. I was told to take a week off work and advised to stay with family if possible (I was 22-ish and living alone at the time). I definitely wasn't capable of working that week (manual job), and was pretty miserable back at work the following week despite a lot of pain killers. Like a PP, I looked like a hamster who'd raided a packet of sunflower seeds.

Rainbowunicorn76 · 05/11/2021 20:40

I had dry socket with each one and it took a full week to feel "normal" each time.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 05/11/2021 20:41

I had 3 wisdom teeth removed in hospital and was back to work the next day (it was straightforward). The pain wasn't bad, but the craters felt gross and I would have liked another day at home in retrospect.

MyAnacondaMight · 05/11/2021 20:44

It really varies. I had two out in my lunch hour on a Friday, then went out to a boozy dinner later. Felt a bit rough and swollen the next day but that was it.

Another extraction I was ok after, just a bit sore from the 2 hours it took! Fine for a few days, then got a dry socket and in severe pain a week later.
