I am scheduled to have both back wisdoms out. My bottom left wisdom is broken has been very painful later.
Other bottom wisdom has a hole in it.
Will i be in more pain after having them removed ?
How long will it take to recover ?

Not too bad for me, but make sure you rest up a bit perhaps the next day too so you give yourself a chance to heal.

decisionsincisions · 05/11/2021 20:48

I had all 4 out under general anesthetic. 3x dry socket. Worst pain I can remember. Weeks to recover fully following the extraction/dry socket/infection.

Cati482 · 05/11/2021 20:58

I recently had one lower wisdom tooth removed on my left along with retained roots on the right side from a failed wisdom tooth extraction from a few years ago, so both sides of my lower jaw were operated on. Mine were removed under GA at hospital. Apart from taking a while to come round from the GA, my recovery was surprisingly very quick and relatively pain free. I had stitches in both sides of my jaw which were a bit tender for a couple of days and my jaw was a bit stiff. I was given codeine to take home alongside paracetamol and ibuprofen but found I only had to take them a couple of times. I had soft foods for the first few days (got through quite a lot of ice cream!) but then went back to my usual diet. Just make sure you keep your mouth as clean as possible, I used Corsodyl mouthwash frequently for the first 24 hours after surgery, then the following day after each meal along with using a very soft brush to clean my teeth. The anticipation of the surgery for me was so much worse than the actual surgery, it was a relief really when it was all over. Best if luck to you 😊

I had all mine removed in hospital at 18. I ate a hot dog that evening, super quick recovery.

Cati482 · 05/11/2021 21:01

Oh, and don’t use straws to drink with after you’ve had them removed. The sucking action will increase your chances of a dry socket as you may accidentally remove the clot that forms over the removal site by sucking.

TSSDNCOP · 05/11/2021 21:03

Two weeks. It was mortal.

MarriedNotAtFirstSight · 05/11/2021 21:17

Very similar to @whiteroseredrose.

Had all 4 out under general. Had more stitches than I could count due to bent roots and the fact they had to cut into my cheek.

Was exceptionally bruised and swollen. Couldn't have returned to work for at least a week afterwards. Would rather go through childbirth x 10 the without any pain relief than go through that again.

SIL had two out and was straightforward and she was right as rain after a couple of hours.

As a PP said, how long is a piece of string..:

PaperMonster · 05/11/2021 22:03

It’s a long while since I had mine done but I was told to have two weeks off after each one - the first I felt better after about a week. But the second was hell! The pain was so much more than the first and I couldn’t keep anything down for a few days - I really needed that fortnight!

lockdownrainbow · 05/11/2021 22:54

Meant having out at dentist

I had one out in hospital. It was vicious, involved a saw and blood spraying, positively medieval - apart from the very welcome pain relief! Needed stitches in my mouth etc. Anyway, it was incredibly painful for about 10 days. I don't really take painkillers but I had to take them as much as I could. Couldn't eat properly, lost weight. I think the socket may have got infected because it seemed to go on for such a long time. It finally did get better though. I think if it happened again I'd go to the doctor but with 3 young kids it was easier to take painkillers and keep hoping it would clear up.

GroggyLegs · 05/11/2021 23:14

Got dry socket in both of mine which was absolutely vile - took 10 days to feel normal again.

But 18m later I'm so glad I had them done. No more pain!

Hen2018 · 05/11/2021 23:46

I had one taken out under sedation. (It had broken off and I have a tiny mouth so it was an awkward job).

It was the sort of recovery where you’re 90% better in 3 days but the last 10% of soreness takes ages!

I drove to Cornwall 5 days later (still with a black eye) and was ok.

Hen2018 · 05/11/2021 23:50

And don’t gargle, rinse or spit as you can dislodge the clots then get dry socket.

The same applies to drinking through straws.

You can use a salt water mouth wash after a few days as long as you don’t “whizz it about” in your mouth.

PlanDeRaccordement · 05/11/2021 23:51

About 6hrs recovery.
I had all 4 out in one go. One was impacted.
No real pain after the anaesthesia wore off.
Just had to not chew back there and keep area clean/gargle with some medicated mouthwash for a few days.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 05/11/2021 23:55

It sounds as though yours are through, like any other tooth, not impacted. It should be fine in that case and just a one day thing. Nobody can completely say or predict individual circumstances though obviously.

MountainDweller · 06/11/2021 00:37

It depends on lots of things - you'll heal faster if you're younger for a start. I had 2 out in my 30s - got by on otc nurofen/codeine. I had a lower one out this summer (now 54). The tooth broke and the roots had to be drilled out. I could barely stand afterwards. The dentist said take paracetamol 🙄🙄🙄 I was in agony when the anaesthetic wore off. I took double the dose of my usual prescribed OxyContin (luckily my afternoon dose was due) plus some extra Oxynorm. I took double the dose at bedtime too. In between I took my usual 1600mg slow release ibuprofen and added paracetamol 4 times a day. I didn't sleep much the first night as I had to lie propped up on my back (can't sleep on the other side and lying flat made it bleed again). After 24 hours I was back to my usual meds but with Oxynorm (my 'rescue med') on top. So don't be fobbed off with over the counter meds! I don't think most dentists have any idea what the pain will be like.

I only had liquids and yoghurts for 3.5 days and then managed to supplement with mashed veg for another couple of weeks. I was pretty tired and weak for a month from the pain and from not eating normally.

I think the hairdresser will be OK unless your face is very sore. I was at the hairdresser after 9 days and back at physio after 2 weeks. I needed to wear a bigger mask to accommodate the swelling, but at least my hamster face was hidden!

I was probably pain free after a month and eating nearly normally after 6 weeks, but the area still hasn't closed up completely (3 months) so stuff like rice and seeds gets stuck and needs vigorous swilling to dislodge Envy

Good luck, I hope it goes OK.

bizboz · 06/11/2021 00:42

Its very variable by person. I had two wisdom teeth removed (when I was much younger - early 20s) and I remember there was a lot of bleeding for the first few hours but but was fine to be out and about within a day or two.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 06/11/2021 00:43

I was back normal very quickly. It didn't hurt obviously, due to anaesthetic, but felt odd; splintery.

I would say to make sure you use ice packs as the best way to minimise swelling, and don't agitate the site much.

Hope it goes well Smile

ChaToilLeam · 06/11/2021 00:43

I had two out, one was really at a weird angle and I was referred to a specialist for mild sedation prior to the extraction. Teeth were out quite fast, was advised to avoid hot drinks, alcohol, gargling/heavy swooshing and straws. Was signed off work 2 days but really was okay on 2nd day, pain managed with normal ibuprofen. Soft foods for a day or two then eating normally.

negomi90 · 06/11/2021 01:10

Watching with fear as I'm booked for all 4 under a General anaesthetic in a month.

Furries · 06/11/2021 02:08

@lockdownrainbow

Removal being done at a hospital Bottom left is more urgent bottom right wisdom has a hole in side but doesn't hurt atall
TBH, I think it’s difficult to judge - there’s no way of knowing. Some people react fine, others don’t.

Will it be done under GA or LA at the hospital? Not that it makes much difference with regards to the healing process.

I had all four removed under GA - it was years ago and can’t remember much, but I don’t think I was in too much pain after. And I had no bruising or swelling. On the other hand, a friend had just one removed and she looked like a chipmunk that had been in a bar fight - really bad bruising and swelling. As a pp has said, look into taking arnica.

Billandben444 · 06/11/2021 06:26

Depends how straight/deep the roots are as well as to how much fiddling around has to be done. My cheeks swelled up alarmingly for nearly a week (all the wrinkles went!) and I felt gross with these massive holes in my mouth. If you don't mind feeling less than 100% at the concert then worth a gamble?

FindingMeno · 06/11/2021 08:48

@negomi90 please don't be scared. I have problems with dental treatment and mine were no worse than a normal extraction Flowers

icedcoffees · 06/11/2021 08:56

It really depends on the tooth and how badly impacted it is.

I've had two wisdom teeth removed. The first one was awful and I was off work for 48 hours afterwards as I was in so much pain I could barely open my mouth.

The second one I was back to work the same day, though I avoided face to face customer interactions as I was a bit swollen and dribble Grin

lockdownrainbow · 06/11/2021 18:37

My wisdoms aren't impacted
Both have come through mostly
Bottom back left is broken
Will be having them taken out at dentist local anaesthetic
