Squeaky Plates

Hi,
I have a suspicion this may have to do with my tinnitus/peri but it’s driving me crazy. When we eat dinner my DH’s cutlery squeaking on the plate drives me mad, It’s almost painful for me. However, it doesn’t happen when we’re eating out. I’ve gotten rid of one set of plates which were particularly bad and I’m happy to donate what we have and buy new. Is it cheap plates - do I need to buy a certain material? Or is it as I said at the start another symptom?

I hate the sound of squeaky plates too, and I have tinnitus.

Our plates seem to have got squeakier and I've noticed that the shine has gone from them so I'm assuming that the dishwasher has 'de-glazed' them, making them squeakier.

I cannot stand squeaky plates! We have a rule in our house that if anyone squeaks 3 times in one meal they get given plastic cutlery! So I'm watching with interest for how to minimise squeaking whenever possible!

I do think the dishwasher plays a part, there's much less squeaking with hand washed plates.

Thank you, It's such a relief to know it's not just me. I wonder if it's worth splurging on Denby or something similar. I hate the thought of doing that and it still being a problem

Denby plates are notoriously squeaky! I have them as my kitchen plates, and the squeaking doesn't bother me. My white Wedgewood doesn't squeak at all.

Does using different rinse aid - or none - make a difference?

RedCarsGoFaster · 05/11/2021 21:46

Eh? I've never had this! All our plates are Denby and all our cutlery is Viners, if that makes a difference?

Is he just too hard with the pressure he puts on the cutlery?

We don't have a dishwasher and have never had this problem. My mum and brother have squeaky plates and they use a dishwasher. Maybe keep a couple to one side and wash in the sink and see if that helps.

RedBonnet · 05/11/2021 22:27

Yep it hurts my teeth. But I don't have tinnitus. AIBU to expect my OH to eat without squeaking the plate though? I don't do it. When it happens I wince so he knows 🤬

Yes, nails on a chalk board for me. I use rinse aid but may have to start hand washing plates if I can't solve the problem. FML

It's the salt in the dishwasher, you can use it salt free but only for minorly dirty stuff and hand wash the rest
