I am supposed to be working, but am in fact staring out of the window and thinking about the 90's when I was in my 20's!

I have just remembered a place called Caspers in London which had a number and a phone on every table, so you could ring the table of anyone you fancied and chat them up. Does anyone else remember it? It was carnage!

That sounds excellent!

I love the champagne button on every table at Bob Bob Ricard.

HerBigChance · 05/11/2021 10:30

I remember it. We had a couple of work Christmas parties there. I remember it being around Grosvenor Square somewhere.

Grenlei · 05/11/2021 10:36

I remember reading about it in one of the magazines of the time - probably Company or similar.

I was keen to go at the time (thought it would be a laugh) but we were all poor students and then by the time we were all working and earning, everyone was in relationships, so I missed the boat!

FoamyBanana · 05/11/2021 10:38

It was definitely a lot less classy than Bob Bob Ricard Zarene! I'd definitely prefer to ring for Champagne these days, than call Dave on table 12 to see if he fancies a snog!

I wonder why it closed? It was always rammed and full of hen/stag parties etc.

I had an xmas party there too HerBigChance - I can remember my 50 something female boss being horrified by the whole experience!

Yes it was a bit of a bear pit @FoamyBanana

I remember a place like this in Muswell hill

I think they had n old train in there too. The seating was in booths of some sort on it

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 05/11/2021 11:45

That takes me back. I remember being a teenager and reading about telephone bars in a magazine and thinking they sounded so chic and sophisticated.

I looked it up and the video footage makes it look so skeevy!

That was The Swiss, it's a Wetherspoons now. Yes, it had an old train on the right as you went in.

Tuxedo Junction in Newcastle upon Tyne had them, and Tuxedo Princess too I think.

Height of sophistication in the 1980s!!

FoamyBanana · 05/11/2021 15:54

Ahh, that video of all the sleaze made me so nostalgic! I am equal parts sad and relieved that my teens will never know the joys of a night out at Caspers!!

Casanovas nightclub in Wakefield also had phones on the tables, the DJ booth had the number 007 Grin seemed the height of sophistication back then 😂 lots of ultra violet lighting you had to make sure you didn’t wear white underwear
Tuxedo Princess was a fun night out in Newcastle, I used to visit with a friend who had family up there, many happy memories

ponkydonkey · 05/11/2021 16:10

My friend met her future husband at caspers!!!
They are divorced now 😬🤣🤣

ponkydonkey · 05/11/2021 16:11

Omg I also remember The Swiss too!

Good times good times

cathyandclare · 05/11/2021 16:13

i went there for my hen night! Loads of fun, I'd forgotten its name until now.

Hugoslavia · 06/11/2021 19:49

I've just watched the video and it is hilarious!! I would have had a whale of a time in there with my friends.

ThreeCharacters · 06/11/2021 19:52

Oh yes! I remember well.

PolaDeVeboise · 06/11/2021 21:39

Great concept, but I was a newly arrived Scot and no fucker could understand a word I was saying. Most annoying.

AuntyFungal · 06/11/2021 21:41

I do remember. I may have gone ‘just the once’.

RainbowLightning · 06/11/2021 21:42

Yes!! Went there with a group of girl friends and the phone didn’t stop ringing. We just wanted to talk to each other though

Faircastle · 06/11/2021 21:44

I went to Casper's once with some friends, when I was a student. We were chatted up by a group of bankers on the next table. We found the whole thing hilarious.

Cheeseandlobster · 06/11/2021 21:46

I do I do. I went as part of a party bus package. We were allowed potato skins and a drink. Mobile phones didn't exist so being able to phone random tables was such a novelty. This thread has really made me miss the simplicity of the 90's

TyrannysaurusXXrightshoarder · 06/11/2021 21:50

Oh god yes, I’d forgotten about this (and probably for good reason Grin)

gettingolderbutcooler · 06/11/2021 21:57

We sat there sadly waiting for the boys to call...😢🤣

GreenClock · 06/11/2021 22:05

I don’t recall this! Sounds like a laugh.

We used to go to Pollo for cheap pasta in the 1990s then on to the Marquee club via a couple of bars.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 06/11/2021 22:09

Gosh that’s a blast from the past! Thank you!
