When did you get rid of car seats all together?

Wwyd? My Ds is tall (takes after me) and is just about 150cm tall at 9. His car seat is extended to the tallest height.

DH is saying it's time it went. I just feel safer with him in it. But, legally he's allowed to travel without it and he's started noticing that other kids his age don't have one.

When did you ditch the car seat?

Around age 8 or 9 I think.

JuneOsborne · 05/11/2021 06:51

Thanks @dementedpixie, so about the same age. I do have an older son and I can't remember feeling like this about the car seat, I can't even remember when we got rid of his.

About 7/140cm

I couldn’t get the back of it up higher to make the seatbelt fit how it should to be safe.

You do know there are plenty of adults who are 150cm, right?

TerrifiedandWorried · 05/11/2021 06:54

Look at where the seat belt sits on his shoulder. That's a more important factor - my 3 have proportionately long bodies and short legs and if they had stayed longer on booster cushions the seat belt would have ended up going up and over their shoulders.

JuneOsborne · 05/11/2021 06:55

I'm not sure what plenty of adults being 150cm (are there, really?) Has to do with it.

He's a child and I'm in charge of his safety and well-being. I just feel a bit odd about getting rid of it all together. Not totally against it, just trying to guage opinions while I decide what to do.

I think this seat converts to a booster. I might do that for a bit and see how I feel. Thanks.

What height do they legally need to be? My daughter was tiny and still in a booster at ten my youngest is going the same way middle one was out years ago

Lockdownbear · 05/11/2021 06:59

150cm is about 5ft, plenty 5ft tall women and the odd short man.

I think when they hit 150 its time for the car seat to go. Mine will likely age out rather the grow out their car seats.

Xmasbaby11 · 05/11/2021 07:00

Dd is nearly 10 and just about fits it still. When she outgrows it, I'll take the back off and use it as a booster. I'll keep her in it as long as possible, while it fits.

dementedpixie · 05/11/2021 07:00

It's 135cm or age 12 whichever comes first

HelloDulling · 05/11/2021 07:00

My very small DS was 12 before we got rid of it.

Talk to incarsafey and they will help!

Atmywitsend29 · 05/11/2021 07:01

When DS was 7, because he was over the required 135cm tall

BeHappyAndSmile · 05/11/2021 07:02

This might help you decide if he fits safely

In the UK 135cm, about 4ft 6 or age 12. Most of the EU its 150cm hence seats are designed to accommodate up to 150cm.

When she no longer fitted in the HBB I swopped to a basic booster. Stopped that when it mount her too high for the seat belt to sit right (kept for a while longer in grandparents car, as they have bucket seats and she needed it for longer).

Really helpful, thanks. I'm going to do this.

Mine is 10 and 140cm still on the booster seat and will be for a while as without it the seatbelt cuts into his neck

PaperMonster · 05/11/2021 07:05

Just got rid of the hbb - daughter’s aged 10 and 150cm tall. Still has a booster cushion so that the seatbelt is positioned safely across her lap rather than on her stomach.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 05/11/2021 07:05

Elder DD is 10band around 150ish (haven't measured her recently). She uses the booster seat on long journeys as its more comfortable but not on just local ones.

Seat belt heights are different in different cars... in some cars she definitely doesn't need the booster, but the seat belt point in our car seems quite high in the middle row.

SushiGo · 05/11/2021 07:06

Useful graphic, thanks.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 05/11/2021 07:16

DS is 8 and 130cm, I'll be getting rid as soon as he's the required height.

Vickim03 · 05/11/2021 07:19

When the belt sits properly without one. So across the shoulder not right up against the neck and across the lap, not around the stomach, my son is tall and we stopped when he was around 9. Tho the recommend she is 12.

Vickim03 · 05/11/2021 07:20

Should say age not she
