Recommend me a whisky

It's getting too cold for my usual G&T and I fancy getting into whisky instead, which ones do you like?

DH drinks Laphroig, but it's too smoky for me, ideally I'd like something a bit smoother, that I can sip whilst curled up under a blanket.

You will probably want to avoid any from Islay and Jura then. They are rather peaty.

BadgerWatch · 04/11/2021 20:08

Dalmore is nice and smooth

midsomermurderess · 04/11/2021 20:10

A Glenmorangie might work.

Look at whiskies from Speyside.

MintyGreenDream · 04/11/2021 20:12

It's not posh but my god Apple Jack Daniels is gorgeous.I have it with ginger ale.

LlamaLasagne · 04/11/2021 20:14

Penderyn from Wales or Highland Park are very easy to drink. Balvenie is lovely and Aberlour is also very good.

AnOldCynic · 04/11/2021 20:17

I've just discovered how lovely a drop of water is in a single malt. I used to think it was for lightweights but it really smooths the flavour out.

WildFlowerBees · 04/11/2021 20:27

Red Breast, Balvenie doublewood, Black Bush. Not peaty lovely and smooth.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 04/11/2021 20:33

Some great recommendations, thanks! I shall have to start a list and work my way through it... 😋

Agree Speyside ones are good for beginners. Look for ones aged in Sherry or rum casks as they are sweeter. Glenrothes was the whisky that first got me into whisky

BookFiend4Life · 04/11/2021 20:37

Oban is my favorite! I also find Laphroaig too smoky

kayakingmum · 04/11/2021 20:37

Dalwhinnie gets my vote.

Bontanics · 04/11/2021 20:38

Jura. Super smooth.

MazzleDazzle · 04/11/2021 20:38

I used to work in a whisky bar and we always recommended Balvenie for beginners. Lovely and smooth.

GenderApostatemk2 · 04/11/2021 20:38

Dalwhinnie.
Auchantoshan
Tamnavulin
All lovely and smooth.
I drink them with cheap Aldi cola, DH either neat or with Dandelion and burdock.

AdoraBell · 04/11/2021 20:40

Can I place mark please, I have no idea about whiskey and is no bloody use as he doesn’t like it.

CastMeAdrift · 04/11/2021 20:42

Scapa is my absolute favourite. So smooth.

CrazyCatMamma · 04/11/2021 20:42

I don't drink whisky really, but have you tried Gunshot Gin from the gin bothy.
It has the heat of whisky but flavour of gin. It's lovely.

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 04/11/2021 20:43

Tulibardine make delicious whiskeys. Smooth, rich and slightly sweet.

spanktastic · 04/11/2021 20:48

Another vote for Jura, it's lovely.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/11/2021 20:50

I've never been able to take to whisky but was recommended The Singleton as a decent beginners whisky out of their range.

I find a bourbon more palatable.

Sorry, got to disagree about Jura, it's fairly smooth
PittaMyBread · 04/11/2021 21:16

My DH drinks Crown, it’s Canadian and we can usually only get it in Canada and America but strangely French supermarkets sell it too so we load up when we have day trips!

Macallan is good

tilder · 09/11/2021 20:50

Yes. Much lighter than an Islay malt.
