Recommend me a whisky

It's getting too cold for my usual G&T and I fancy getting into whisky instead, which ones do you like?

DH drinks Laphroig, but it's too smoky for me, ideally I'd like something a bit smoother, that I can sip whilst curled up under a blanket.

@MazzleDazzle

I used to work in a whisky bar and we always recommended Balvenie for beginners. Lovely and smooth.
Balvenie also pretty good and uncomplicated. For a whisky.
Rhumba · 09/11/2021 20:54

Macallan or Jura are my two favs. Otherwise what about oak gin from Eden Mill which has a sort of whisky taste to it.

Classica · 09/11/2021 20:59

I like a nice smooth bourbon. Maker's Mark for something affordable and Van Winkle for £££.

No mixer just a splash of water.

As other have said, Balvenie is a good one. I had a hot toddie made the other day with Glenfarclas, really really lovely. And a lesser known one Edradour.

wishing3 · 09/11/2021 21:05

Jura

lifesgoodwithlg · 09/11/2021 21:05

Disclaimer I am Irish and very patriotic about my whiskeys! Jameson / powers for everyday, Redbreast when pushing the boat out

Crazycrazylady · 09/11/2021 21:06

Redbreast 12 year old absolutely

TupilaLilium · 09/11/2021 21:09

I like Balvenie, probably because we took a lovely tour they once.

I much prefer cognac.

SockFluffInTheBath · 09/11/2021 21:09

If you don’t like the heavy peaty ones you could try Edradour (DH’s favourite) and Glenkinchie.

Suzi888 · 09/11/2021 21:11

DH loves Auchentoshan, didn’t rate Jura at all.

BadgerWatch · 09/11/2021 21:12

@CrazyCatMamma DH bought me some Gunshot Gin the other year. I've never come across anyone that's heard of it. It was lovely with Ginger Ale

lastqueenofscotland · 09/11/2021 21:13

Royal lochnagar if you can get hold of it.
If not bush mills black bush is nice and chocolatey

mizu · 09/11/2021 21:19

Another vote for Jameson's whiskey. Also like Suntory Japanese whiskey.

Cafog · 09/11/2021 21:22

I haven't heard of most of these! I've never strayed from Jameson, love it hot or with a lemonade and slice of lime.

HemanOrSheRa · 09/11/2021 21:39

@CrazyCatMamma

I don't drink whisky really, but have you tried Gunshot Gin from the gin bothy. It has the heat of whisky but flavour of gin. It's lovely.
Thank you! Thank you! It's my dearest friend's 50th birthday soon. I've been racking my brains and googling furiously to try and find him a suitable gift. I've just ordered a gunshot gin gift set. It will be perfect Smile.
tatyr · 09/11/2021 21:56

Not all of the Islay whiskeys are peaty, Ardbeg, Lagavulin and Laphroaig are, but try a Bunnahabhain 15yo, a Bowmore, Or Bruichladdich. Jura also very nice.
With so many to try you'll surely find a favourite!

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 09/11/2021 22:00

Glenkinchie. Never could enjoy whisky before I tried that one.

Windyone · 09/11/2021 22:03

Another vote for Bruichladdich whisky here. Not peaty and very open about provenance of ingredients etc. All Scottish barley unlike other whiskies

Mum2jenny · 09/11/2021 22:05

I like Edradour too. It’s also known as House of Lords whisky.

Colin56 · 09/11/2021 22:43

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal
Try Nikka from Japan. Awesome. Expensive but it is unbelieveable. Knocks everything else out of the park.

beachtosunset · 09/11/2021 22:48

It's personal taste really. Malt is not necessarily better than blended.

I couldn't stand Laphroaig (too brackish for me) but I did like Jura Journey. Slightly caramel-ly but light and not too sweet.

No longer drink due to blood pressure Sad

beachtosunset · 09/11/2021 22:49

OH!! Forgot whatever you choose, it must be bottled in Scotland. Check the label and ensure the bottling is in Scotland. Their water is everything.

Otherwise don't bother.

I only learnt recently that a lot of Japanese whiskies aren't actually made in Japan at all. They import Scotch and Canadian whiskies and then pop them into a barrel in Japan.

Colin56 · 09/11/2021 23:35

@Classica
Yes, this article explains it, lots of Nikka is Japanese, from.the Barrel is not I think.

I don’t drink it myself but the old man is a big whisky fan. He got a bottle of Glen Grant for his birthday last year and raved about it for ages.
