Anyone renewed driving licence at a post office recently?

So I have to go into the post office for my 10 yearly renewal
I can't see that I need to make an appointment so can I just rock up and is it as quick and as simple as it claims to be?
Looking at the list of those who offer this service it's quite a drive and I was thinking of going first thing in the morning so thought I'd ask on here first
Thanks

I rocked up at the post office - no appointment. Driving license renewal had its own counter so it was 10 minutes tops; no queue and it was a lunch time !

If you have a current passport you can do it online

JessieOh · 03/11/2021 20:56

I did it recently without an appointment. Like you, I was hesitant because it was a schlep to the right post office and having to look relatively OK for the photo- I hate photos as much as I hate the dentist!
The cashier checked my documents, told me to stand in a booth to take my photo, back to counter, paid and sent on my way. All in all, once through the queue it took no more than 10 mins.

Received my licence in less about 7 working days. Glad it's done for another 10years, but it was probably one of the smoothest processes I've done for a long time. Couldn't fault it apart from it only being selected post offices.

You can do it online, takes 5 minutes

SinoohXaenaHide · 03/11/2021 21:04

I did it and it was very quick and easy and the chap behind the counter was very kind (I have autism and get very anxious in unfamiliar circumstances)

The only stressful thing was that he had to keep my old driving licence and I was left with no way of proving my identity until the replacement arrived. But it was ok in the end.

fedup078 · 03/11/2021 21:16

@gogohm not if you don't have a passport

God who doesn't have a passport!!!

Get one and do it online. Everything will be digital soon. Better get used to it before you're forced.

Lots of people don't have a passport!
It's expensive for a start

TaraLewis · 03/11/2021 21:59

A lot of people don't have passports @MrsArchchancellorRidcully lots can't afford a passport and many people don't travel abroad. Some us aren't well enough to travel to the next town let alone abroad so why would we need a passport Confused

Agree with every word of this.

Tried online and it was hours wasted as the system hung up a few times and sent me back to the beginning then when I finally got to the end it was declined with no explanation given and I wasted more time trying to find out why.

mistermagpie · 03/11/2021 22:15

I had the same experience with the online system. Turns out their 'system' has my name spelled wrong, even though it's correct on the licence, so the system couldn't find me. Then spent an hour on hold on the phone only to be told that maybe I was spelling my OWN NAME incorrectly myself.

Anyway, off to the post office I go - hopefully it will be more straightforward.

Jessicabrassica · 03/11/2021 23:27

I went to the post office where I work. Rocked up at lunchtime. No queue. It took 5 mins and the license arrived less than a week later. Excellent service.

I don't have a passport. Not been abroad since I was pregnant with now 12yo. We can't afford to travel (or to buy 4 passports).

fedup078 · 04/11/2021 07:05

@MrsArchchancellorRidcully well for your information I do have a passport but it's in my maiden name and when it expires in 6 month I won't be renewing it as I have no intention of going abroad with the shit show that is the world at the moment
What a ridiculously entitled thing to say
