I've just settled down to re-watch Buffy

Hopefully I won't be disappointed! Dd1 says it "looks oooold mum" 🙄

I'm watching with dd. She loves it. We're watching Buffy and Angel in order according to the Watchers Council to get all the crossovers in the right place. So we're now on Angel season 2 and Buffy season 5. Just watched the first episode of S5 tonight so we've just met Dawn and dd's very confused. "Huh? I didn't know Buffy had a sister!"

Camdenish · 02/11/2021 21:17

Where are Buffy and Angel available?

burnoutbabe · 02/11/2021 21:26

@Camdenish

Where are Buffy and Angel available?
I watched on e4 then moved over to Disney later on.
SinoohXaenaHide · 02/11/2021 21:29

We started watching with DC one episode a week a while back. Its true that there are some quite complex topics covered in later seasons but we reckon if we don't race ahead too quickly we won't hit those episodes until youngest is 13 or so which feels ok. I don't think I would start as early as 9 but I know a friend did allow her youngest to see it that young because she has kids across a much wider age range so the kid gets a lot of stuff that's a bit too old for him.

‘It must be bunnies’

amusedbush · 02/11/2021 21:38

I rewatch Buffy every couple of years and I still love it. Yes, it's a bit naff in places and it is definitely dated (I laugh when Buffy doesn't answer her house phone so they have absolutely no way of contacting her or knowing where she is - so alien now Grin) but it's great and worth watching.

lucysmam · 02/11/2021 21:41

Camdenish, I'm watching on Disney.

I'm up to Ep3; I actually remember watching this one!

@MojoJojo71

I’ve never seen it. Is it suitable for my almost 9 yo DD?
No, not really. Too scary and the jokes will go over her head.
Kanaloa · 02/11/2021 22:03

@Camdenish

I was obsessed with Buffy and Angel, I had all the VHS box sets and knew some episodes off by heart.

I don’t know if I dare to watch with my 13 year old. Will it have lost its magic? Is the first season too dry for a modern teen? Is there too much sex? Are the monsters too frightening?

I don’t think there’s much sex in the first series, if any? I do think going in you need to sell it as the 90s/2000s ‘vibe’ so they’re aware it will look a bit dated.

Later series there is a lot more sex if that’s something that worries you.

Alicesweewonders · 02/11/2021 22:35

I re watched Buffy again last year, felt nostalgic.

Loved season 1-3, after that i found it a slog to watch..

Camdenish · 02/11/2021 23:08

Great, I’ll look for it on Disney and I’ll see if DD wants to watch too. She’s wearing my 90s/00s clothes so she may love the vibe.

Justkidding55 · 21/10/2022 07:38

Even though I was 9 when it came out and I remember my friends watching the older series I am
warching it for the first time and wow I love it. Yes it’s dated in parts but it doesn’t matter. I’m watching it with the rewatcher podcast and love that too.

Tomorrowisalatterday · 21/10/2022 07:42

OP - have you seen Veronica Mars? Very similar feel to Buffy, I think

Unpopular opinion: I really like season 1 of Buffy and actually liked the show best when it had more comedy. I thought SMG and Tony Head had great comic timing with each other. I didn't enjoy the more angsty bits as much.

VenusClapTrap · 21/10/2022 07:45

Tried watching it with my dc a while ago. They didn’t like it. I think they were too young at 9 and 11.

lucysmam · 21/10/2022 17:45

@Tomorrowisalatterday I haven't, but I will have a look for it this weekend, thank you. I'm in need of something to fill a quiet half term of painting/crafting props for work.

Just popping onto the thread to say the series was good and very fun at times, but the film is absolutely brilliant and criminally underrated.

Covetthee · 21/10/2022 18:07

I recently rewatched it, it was definitely cheesier first season but got a lot better and definitely more female empowerment messages.

Also weird to see all the looks and fashion being currently in. Your teen must be getting some great inspo!

lucysmam · 21/10/2022 18:23

@GorgeousLadyofWrestling yes! I love the film & have repeatedly told dd to watch it but so far she hasn't.

@Covetthee yes, she did, and pinched some of the clothes I have left from around then!

HeadAboveTheParapet · 21/10/2022 18:31

I'm rewatching Veronica mars too.
I don't think I ever watched season 3. Weevil really does look I'll and I never realised how sick the actor actual got.

ChilliMum · 21/10/2022 18:33

Watched it with my dd when she was 11 nearly 12. She was having a bit of a rough time at school; some friendship group changes and she was suddenly on the outside of all the groups so I suggested we watch together.

I love that the scooby gang were the outsiders. It's camp, some of the humour is absolutely fantastic.

She absolutely loved it. We laughed lots and it opened up some great conversations about school, friendship and being different.

The friendship issues resolved soon enough as they do with teen girls but I like to think Buffy helped with a rough patch 😁

We didn't watch the episode where Joyce dies though. She was fine with monsters (she knows they are a metaphor) and a bit of sex but I thought that was a very upsetting episode and unlike the monsters very realistic.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 21/10/2022 18:41

Nice resurrected thread. Dd and I are still going. Life has got in the way a fair bit so we don't manage to watch every week. Season 6 of Buffy and 3 of Angel now. We've thrown ds2 out mostly now but I decided to watch everything with dd though we've had a few conversations about destructive relationships.

SinoohXaenaHide · 21/10/2022 20:20

We are still going too. Slowed down a bit since having started Angel too. In the middle of the whole Dawn/Key/Glory plotline at the moment.

Awrite · 21/10/2022 20:30

I tried to get dd into Buffy a couple of years ago, when she was 14/15. Actually, maybe it was a bit longer ago. Anyway, the episode with the boy in coma who had been abused and so everyone was living in a nightmare scared her shitless.

We powered on thinking it was a one-off, then an episode about puppets started and we had to stop.

I might be able to get her to revisit it now she's older and has seen other scary programmes/films.

Awrite · 21/10/2022 20:31

Oh yes to watching Veronica Mars. It stands up.

SpikeGilesSandwich · 21/10/2022 20:34

Best show ever. StarStarStarStarStar
