Birthday- whats reasonable

Its my birthday. I'm on my own with 4 kids who are too young to do anything to celebrate. I tried to make plans with friends, but all busy and can't commit to anything anytime soon. I know lots of people have to spend their birthdays like this, and had made my peace with it- people are busy.
But I'm bloody hurt today by all the "Happy Birthday, have a great day" messages, and even worse "what are you doing to celebrate?"
It feels humiliating to say "Eating a box of celebrations alone because everyone I know is too busy!"
I'm just posting because I feel sorry for myself. I need a good shake and I'll be back to myself in the morning.

I put this out here at 1430 this afternoon and by 2330 I still hadn't had a response. Just like my birthday invites. Is there something making me invisible? Do I come across rude of weird?

You don’t come across as rude or weird at all, @CustardCreamsAndMintTea! Some posts just seem to get missed, I think it’s pretty random.

I just had a very alone birthday and it was grim. I’m just glad it’s over now.

I don’t know what the answer is. Wishing you a Happy birthday doesn’t seem helpful in the circumstances, but I totally get you. Flowers

Pinkchocolate · 02/11/2021 23:32

Happy birthday OP. You don’t come across as rude or weird and you’re allowed to feel sorry for yourself, we all have this expectation of a good day on our birthday. Hopefully tomorrow will be better for you.

Jumpingintochristmas · 02/11/2021 23:32

Happy birthday to you!

I find things need planned far in advance to work around childcare, friends diaries etc. Why not think ahead to next year and plan a spa trip or dinner with friends?

Even with just the kids you could have had a small tea party? X

Workinghardeveryday · 02/11/2021 23:33

Happy birthday @CustardCreamsAndMintTea!!! Sorry it has been shit.

Your friends sound very selfish!!! Do something at the weekend just for you maybe (without kids if possible?).

🍺🍷🍾🥃🎂🍰🍔🍟🌮🍕🍷🍷🍷😁xx

Rainbowunicorn76 · 02/11/2021 23:33

Happy Birthday op it's mine too.
I don't normally do anything, this year I stuck an open invite on Facebook "I'll be at x pub on Saturday from 7pm why not drop in"
It turned out to be a lovely evening and several people I wouldn't have thought of contacting 1-1 came and we had a great catch up.
Would something like that work?
If you can't get a sitter you could do an open house invite?
People obviously care enough to say Happy Birthday 🎈

CustardCreamsAndMintTea · 02/11/2021 23:33

@Jumpingintochristmas you are right. Better to be proactive. I'm looking to next year

ThanksThanksThanks

Workinghardeveryday · 02/11/2021 23:34

Ps, no you’re not weird in the slightest!!!

You’re just pissed off - your birthday was shite, very normal to feel that way!!

MyMagicStars · 02/11/2021 23:34

Happy birthday OP xx

CustardCreamsAndMintTea · 02/11/2021 23:35

@Rainbowunicorn76 Happy Birthday! Open invite was a cool idea. Impressed Smile

Happy birthday OP. It's shite when people are too busy. It will get better as your kids get older, why don't you join a few clubs or something to try and meet new people.
I've put posts up before too that no one answers. I think some posts just get lost at times and it's nothing personal.

catlovingdoctor · 02/11/2021 23:35

Wishing you many happy returns. It's not personal, sometimes people are just shitty/self-centered. I have had the same. It's nothing to do with you, I promise 🌹

Tiggles · 02/11/2021 23:36

Happy birthday
Sorry it hasn't been the best of days.

Workinghardeveryday · 02/11/2021 23:36

@CustardCreamsAndMintTea totally do what @Rainbowunicorn76 said! Why wait till next year? Do it for weekend if possible

CustardCreamsAndMintTea · 02/11/2021 23:38

@Rainbowunicorn76 @Workinghardeveryday trendsetting Grin I would not have the courage this year. Id end up alone in a bar, but its a great idea.
