I am in a bit of a dilemma at the moment. Changing wardrobe and just wondered how many pairs of shoes/trainers should you own?

I'm not sure that there is a set number.

Ethically maybe as few as possible as they will all use energy to produce and use resources.

Practically wouldn’t it depend on your lifestyle? I don’t need good walking shoes or two sets of trainers (or even one with my current gym usage). I wear boots and always have a spare pair though.

Depends how many you need. For DH this appears to be 738 pairs of boots (slight exaggeration!) But they are all subtly different. Motorcycle boots. Smart work books. Older work boots. Waterproof work boots. Summer weight work boots. Different colour work boots. Parade boots. Walking boots. Snow boots....

Should?

DaisyWaldron · 02/11/2021 08:37

It depends on your lifestyle. I walk everywhere and have a job where I'm on my feet all day, so I have 2 pairs comfortable work shoes, 2 pairs sturdy winter boots, 1 pair exercise trainers, 1 pair fashion trainers, 1 pair walking boots, 1 pair flat lace up shoes, 1 pair Birkenstocks, 1 pair evening shoes, 1 pair slippers, and 1 pair gardening boots which I can slip on to go outside. Also 1 pair quad skates, but I'm not if they count.

Different lifestyles need different types of shoe.

EverybodyScream · 02/11/2021 08:39

I own about 20 pairs I think. From trianers, to flats, heels to Wellington boots.

According to my bastard osteopath two: one pair of ugly trainers (white) for spring/summer and one pair of ugly trainers (black) for autumn/winter. He'd have a fit if he saw my excessive shoe and boot collection which contains no trainers at all (unless you count Skechers which he doesn't).

As few as possible.

“Sneaker production is exceptionally carbon intensive, accounting for 1.4% of the global greenhouse gas emissions, which is significant given that air travel is responsible for 2.5 percent of all emissions.”
