I have decluttered 80% of my clothes

I’m hoping this will revolutionise my life. If not I think I’ll probably regret it .
I now own just :

8 pairs of socks
12 pairs of knickers
2 bras
2 pairs of tights

1 pair of jeans
4 pairs leggings
2 dresses
1 skirt
2 cardigans
2 jumpers
2 vest tops
2 long sleeve tops

5 pairs pjs

Trainers
Boots

Raincoat
Black jacket
Smart grey coat
1 pair gloves
2 scarves

I’m hoping this is enough of a capsule wardrobe. I threw away everything that either didn’t fit me right now (I’d collected a wardrobe of stuff to slim into, also stuff for if I put on weight and even a maternity wardrobe for of I had another dc. I even had a load of stuff from when o decided I wanted to change my image 🤦‍♀️ But actually that was a mid life crisis I think ).

I’m worried I’ll regret it but hopefully not. Has anyone else done this? Did it work out and was it better with laundry ?

No, but I wish I would. You might inspire me!

I know that I have nothing I like in my wardrobe. Still trying to lose 2 stone!

No I haven't.

I hope it works out well for you!

I think it's good to get rid of the things that no longer fit or are definitely not your taste/style etc but I don't see the point in getting rid of socks/leggings/T-shirt's or whatever that you like & fit, just to have a certain number of items. I'd keep those and just not buy anymore.

But I hope it works for you!!

itsmeagainagain · 31/10/2021 21:13

Hey @minimall I’ve just done similar although have kept a bit more than you! I’ve got rid of everything that I was waiting to fit into and stuff that’s fits but I didn’t love and never wore. It was scary at first but now I love opening my wardrobe and only seeing things that I love and that fit. I do however hace some shopping plans for a few gaps but I’m going to be very selective about what I buy this time. What made you do it?

minimall · 31/10/2021 21:15

I just got to the point where I was opening my very full drawers each day but everything i took out was too small/big/didn’t suit me and it was a total mess. I couldn’t shit my wardrobe door as it was so full and I also had tons of shoes that I’ve never worn as they were heels and I don’t really go out

I'm a minimalist but also a bit of a chameleon style-wise.
I admire you, op, but I'm struggling with needing variety, while knowing that the whole point is that it's the variety that complicates life.

I would like to go shopping but for some key pieces in a few weeks maybe as I feel I don’t really know my style of that makes sense ? I want to just enjoy the space and maybe try to find inspiration somewhere as I’m totally out of it when it comes to knowing what sort of thing might suit me or what colours etc

I think I’m just enjoying the space for now and being able to pick pretty much any Combination of things and it’ll go !

Well done OP! Still waiting to do mine - I’m at the same breaking point as you were. I can’t shut my cupboard doors. I can’t wear more than half the things in there as they’re too small or too big or I’m waiting to slim into them etc. I’m just feeling too daunted (and to be fair lack the time right now) to start!

lljkk · 31/10/2021 21:23

Wow that's hardcore minimal. You basically have just 4 daytime outfits by my style standards (I don't wear leggings on their own). But why 5 pairs of PJs? to allow for different temperatures or to wear while all the rest is in the wash? do you not need different types of clothing for diverse activities (eg., playing footie vs. a wedding)?

thesnailandthewhale · 31/10/2021 21:29

I always struggle to understand how people can do this - eg. 2 bras?! I have a range of colours, then there's the strapless one, the nice ones with matching knickers, sports bra etc ...

One pair of trainers and one pair of boots? No heels or flip flops ?

I wish I could do it but I could never be that ruthless. Well done though :)

REDHERO · 31/10/2021 21:32

If we are all honest we probably wear only a small amount of the clothing we own more than a couple of times.

I went through my wardrobe and gave away everything I hadn't worn in a year. I tend to wear the same things and stopped buying clothing. It's a waste of money and bad for the environment.

Anyone who says they have money problems take a look at the waste of money spent on clothing, toiletries, tat and you will likely find decent savings there.

RaininSummer · 31/10/2021 21:33

I really couldn't do this. Love my clothes. Not sure how it helps with laundry though. I think it could actually be more stressful if your clothes don't dry in time.

5 pairs of pjs just because I have endometriosis and I know I’ll need spares !!

I’m not sure if I’ve got rid of too much but it was things like swimwear …. I haven’t been swimming in years so got rid of it.

Equally I haven’t been out or yo a wedding in years so I took the chance and decluttered occasion wear too and if I get an invite I’ll get something then but try to be clever and find something classic that I can accessorise for different occasions maybe

No ! All gone as I never wore them.

I had flip flops that broke end of august so I got trainers and never replaced them in planning next spring to get a few summer bits . Literally all my summer stuff was too small or so worn or just wasn’t quite right but I wore it anyway and felt frumpy

I'm perplexed at some of the choices tbh

I could manage with one pair of jammies and one scarf but need at least 3 bras.

Also there's the occasional wear- outfits for weddings, funerals, Christmas nights out, etc.

Then summer holiday clothes.

No outer wear for walking?

No gym/ exercise clothes?

No loungewear for indoor days?

Mosky · 31/10/2021 21:42

I'm trying to do this. I don't have clothes that are too small or too big, so anything I've bought in the last 40 years will still fit, not that I wear anything that old but it's hard to throw out nice clothes that fit but aren't worn.
I never go "out" anywhere so have posh frocks that haven't been worn in years. I haven't worn tights since before DC so 1995 but I still have some.
I haven't worn smart jackets since I last worked in an office in 2007 but I still have some.
I only wear jeans or yoga bottoms.
Walking boots or ankle boots.
I need to be ruthless don't I?

ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 31/10/2021 21:45

Well done. I wish I could do this. My wardrobe stresses me out, it’s so full. The worst thing is, I don’t really like any of my clothes anymore. I wish I hadn’t wasted so much money.

Going to get summer stuff next year.

I don’t go to the gym etc . Not returning to work till next year so I think I should manage (I hope!)
For walking I think jeans snd trainers ok as it’s just walking with dc etc

@minimall were you aiming to reach those numbers of clothes or was that number just what you happened to be left with once you got rid of clothes that didn’t suit/fit?

LadyWithLapdog · 31/10/2021 21:51

Well done! I get stupidly sentimental about some stuff even if I know I’ll never wear it again and my DDs would run a mile from them. The wrong side of “vintage”.

ColourBeautiful · 31/10/2021 21:51

Also I would love to do this! Sounds like freedom!

StrongLegs · 31/10/2021 21:57

Well done OP. I do this regularly and it's brilliant. It's so much easier to find the nice stuff, and I don't have all the subliminal guilt any more because there are no clothes that I don't look good in. Yay!

My one slight worry is the two bra plan. It's very tricky to suddenly realise they're both in the washing machine when you have 5 minutes to get out of the door to a polite occassion.

This happened to me recently. I then panicked and bought three new bras online, all of where were too small, so that I can hardly breathe in them. Inexplicably I kept them all. I have no idea why.

minimall · 31/10/2021 21:59
@minimall were you aiming to reach those numbers of clothes or was that number just what you happened to be left with once you got rid of clothes that didn’t suit/fit?
Initially I had no numbers in mind. Once I started though and was halfway through I thought I needed to have some kind of target and I then wrote down what I remember wearing in the week before and sort of worked from that then decided what amount I needed I also tried to make sure it all went together so I could use any combination

It’s all pretty dull colours due to that but I’m hoping it’s just the start and I can switch things about or get a handful of key pieces in future

I just printed the return label. Better idea to send them back. :-)
