DD and I have watched all 3 series of Stranger Things and loved them. But when we watched half of Return to Oz (Rated 6+ on Disney plus) she freaked out. We didn't even get to the wheelers or the headless queen!

Return to Oz is terrifying, those wheelie things are hideous.

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 31/10/2021 20:47

We didn't get to the wheelers though!

My daughter is nearly twenty. I only have to say “Dorothy Gaaaayyle” in that voice and she’s a wreck! All those heads on the shelves freaked her out! DH let her watch The original It when she was six (🤨!), but apparently I’m the one who scarred her for life for ‘making’ her watch Return to Oz!

BiscoffAddict · 31/10/2021 20:56

The whole film is very creepy though. The girl trapped in the mirror who looks all blurry like a ghost, the people turned into statues, the scarecrow like thing with the pumpkin head, the heads in the cases, the wheelies. I can’t believe it’s a children film.

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 20:57

Return to OZ is the ultimate scary movie!! The wheelers and mombie Shock can’t believe it was ever considered a children’s movie. Grin

RachelHasThoseInBurgundy · 31/10/2021 20:58

Jack pumpkin head and his head falls off!! The moose head sleigh! The caves with the rocks monster!

TreesoftheField · 31/10/2021 20:58

I still have nightmares about return to Oz, isn't there a sofa with a deer's head on it??? Creepy

evilharpy · 31/10/2021 21:01

My parents took me to see Return to Oz in the cinema when I would have been 5 and it scared the shit out of me - they were expecting it to be along the same lines as Wizard of oz which I loved! It's incredibly creepy, I'm still scared of it and I'm now 41. Even the hospital bit at the very start is scary AF before she gets anywhere near Oz.

Smartiepants79 · 31/10/2021 21:01

Never seen stranger things but return to Oz was bloody terrifying.
I remember hiding behind the seats at the cinema.

BiscoffAddict · 31/10/2021 21:03

They also take Dorothy to a psychiatric hospital at the start because they think Oz is figment of her imagination and are going to give her electric shock treatment. It’s pretty harrowing stuff,

SheWoreYellow · 31/10/2021 21:03

I’ve seen some of stranger things.

I thought I’d give Return to Oz a go with my 13 and 11 year old and got about five minutes in before turning it off. The beginning is horrific.

Marelle · 31/10/2021 21:04

It is terrifying! Obviously given a rating in the 80s when kids were made of sterner stuff and it’s never been updated. Other films from the same era also have lax ratings. I remember being terrified of those creatures in Labyrinth that removed their heads. And I can’t believe Netflix thinks the Neverending Story is a U! (I am still traumatised by that 30 years later)

gaggiagirl · 31/10/2021 21:11

It's so scary. I put it on for the children this week and my eldest ran out of the room as soon as mombie started walking around all headless

wonderbegone · 31/10/2021 21:12

Awwww the memories, I loved that film as a kid lol.

IfImLyingImDying · 31/10/2021 21:12

100%

Absolutely bloody terrifying.

jay55 · 31/10/2021 21:15

I saw it as a kid when it came out and was terrified. Was about 9.

ChocolateCauldron · 31/10/2021 21:20

The options in 1985 where more limited, as the 12a rating hadn't been introduced yet, which meant stuff that would be rated higher got all put in the same bucket, so to speak.

OrangeBananaFish · 31/10/2021 21:24

I've seen all sorts of horror movies - Nightmare on Elm St, The Shining, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Saw, Paranormal Activity, Conjuring etc etc etc.

However, nothing is as scary as the Wheelies. The whole film has a terror feeling to it from the hospital until the end, but the Wheelies are just terrifying.

AnImposter · 31/10/2021 21:29

Those wheelies gave me nightmares for years!!!

RubyJam · 31/10/2021 22:59

Yes , Return to Oz is such a dark film
The themes of electrocution/ asylum / locked up / scary aunts it’s like a modern day horror

I do love the film but it’s definitely not anything like a modern day kids movie

LorenzoVonMatterhorn · 31/10/2021 23:02

My god op. I hadnt thought about return to oz all year. Now i wont be able to sleep tonight

WheelieBinPrincess · 31/10/2021 23:05

Oh god I love RTO.

I called my cat Belina!

DifficultBloodyWoman · 31/10/2021 23:06

I was terrified by it!

And I remember it being shown as the end of year film at my junior school. I was probably only 7 or 8 at the time so there were kids younger than me watching it too.

Still freaks me out thinking about it today!
