Do those melatonin sleeping tablets from a health food shop actually work?

I was awake half the night last night. Have to be up at 6 am tomorrow.

I don't want to go hell for leather asking for actual sleeping tablets. But just idly wondering if the health food shop offerings are just placebo basically or if they help at all.

Melatonin is not available to buy over the counter in the UK, it has to be prescribed. So it would depend what sort of ingredients the supplements you’re thinking of have.

AudTheDeepMinded · 31/10/2021 19:45

I've taken valerian ones. You have to take them a good few hours before bedtime, once you are at the stage of not sleeping it is too late! I normally take 2 around half 8 which works a treat by tennish.

The ones you can buy otc in the US work fine.

Where are you seeing it for sale in the UK? It's a prescription only medication here. Lots of people will now pile in and link to the dodgy websites they buy it off and apparently have no problems (including eBay), but no other prescription drug would be recommended to just buy online.

God knows what's in the pills they are receiving when plenty of supplements are shown to be no better than sawdust or even contain OD levels of drugs.

So no don't buy them.

RavenAtTheWindow · 31/10/2021 19:47

You can buy melatonin online.

TipseyTorvey · 31/10/2021 19:49

You can buy melatonin from US sites legally and yes they do work. You can try to get it prescribed in the UK but its not always easy. I'm lucky I have friends in the US who send me regular bottles as its just normal pharmacy shelf stock over there. Was trickier in lockdown.

I brought magnesium tablets online to help with sleep and they've been fantastic. Get a solid sleep now, before I used to wake a Few times a night. I got mine on amazon. Worth a try

ManifestingWisdom · 31/10/2021 19:50

I'm in Ireland but if if it's not available without a prescription in the UK I'd be really surprised if it's available without a prescription here. Regulations tend to be very similar.

I would be a bit scared to order something I've never tried before online.

Hmmm...........

I was googling melatonin tablets and there seemed to be no shortage of options so I thought they were for sale in health food shops. I will check this out next weekend.

I went for a run today so with any luck i'll sleep tonight.

@TipseyTorvey having prescription only medication sent into the UK is illegal. If Customs identify it, the delivery will be intercepted and your address will be popped on a list for similar packages to be checked for more medication.

They can, mine work a treat. I use that and a deep pillow spray, it's now my bedtime ritual. I got magnesium tablets for my son as well as his sleep was so bad, the doctor recommended it.

Boudiccasback · 31/10/2021 19:53

They are smazing

Yeh, I'd want to avoid that kind of thing!! Don't want my name going down on any lists of Receivers of non prescribed medications!

You never know when that kind of thing could come to light. Every time you go up a grade in an open competition for the civil service they do one of those tests on you.

Can I ask which ones (what strength?) do you take?
ManifestingWisdom · 31/10/2021 19:54

I've just taken a magnesium tablet anyway! Grin

The melatonin you buy from US sites is just the stuff they sell over the counter there. It's nothing different Hmm It may be a prescription drug here, but it is available over the counter in many other countries. Getting on prescription here via the NHS involves a painfully slow and bureaucractic process that would have most people lying awake at night even if they don't already. It's probably easier to get a script for benzos.

Of course @Howshouldibehave They're Incite Nutrition Magnesium Citrate 650mg and I take 2. They also help with less muscle pain from the gym so they've become my holy grail Grin

I take the Tesco herbal sleep tablets and find them to be very good.

Horlicks works as well.
