This is for a masquerade ball I am going to in January. The theme is 'European Myths' but with a historic feel to the costumes because of it being a ball, so no later in style than Victorian (dresses, fabrics etc not being denim or plastic for example.)

I have no sewing machine experience, but I will pay where needed adapt or buy things - my mind is whirling! It is such an open theme - I am thinking Ovid's Metamorphoses for example, or some of the Nordic myths...

I thought I would ask for inspiration from some creative minds if anyone has any thoughts!

Rhinemaiden, slinky silvery dress with floating green and blue cape/drapery, a sparkling diadem, lines of sparkling water drops on the dress...

Hippolyta, Greek drapery white and silver or very pale gold, moon jewellery including a tiara...

What sort of shape and colouring are you?

I am a largeish and tall 5 ft 8 size 14/16 and drapes are definitely the way to go. I already have a mask and a tiara in silver so I think silver is going to be a good base colour with anything else.

I have a large teal curtain! Not quite the starting point, but I will have to dig into my costume box that I have not really looked at for a year or so.

Both those suggestions so far sound really inspired, thank you! I had not heard of the Rhinemaidens and I like learning about new mythologies.

You sound like a perfect Rhinemaiden! As you've already got a silver mask and tiara, you're already half way there with the costume.
It all seems like wonderful fun!

Thank you. I am going to make a short list and definitely try and match what I already have but also use the occasion to try and splash out a bit!

I do love these sorts of events, just do not get to do them very often these days.

I’ve had another thought @MrsPeacockInTheLibrary, what about Circe?
You could still use the Greek drapery idea for the dress, but the colours would be autumnal, oranges, yellow & gold, perhaps with corn motifs drawn or embroidered on. In your hair you could have a coronet of gold leaves and corn stems.
And here’s a fun idea, carry a shallow basket filled with Percy Pig sweets (from Marks & Sparks) for you to distribute to the other guests, to emphasise who your character was.
