What joys have your dc got trick or treating?

We took local dc round our nice estate last night & visited all the houses that stated they were happy to have us via the WhatsApp group.

Overheard the boys saying ugh they taste funny & looked to see them tucking into a box of maltesers & ds says 'yeah they're out of date..'. So I eyerolled & said 'I'm sure they're grand' - who can let maltesers go out of date? Best before was 2013!

Other mum had just messaged this morning to say she found some sweets in the stash that were BB 2009! Older than any of the dc that were out! The maltesers came from retired GP house too! 🤣

Nothing yet, trick or treat is tonight! I don't know anyone who went yesterday, Halloween is today.

We're a bit in the Bible Belt of NI so a lot of people might not like being knocked on of a Sunday evening so we went for last night. Also, it went on for ages last night & would like my dc in bed before 11pm or getting to school in the morning will be crap.

Sounds like they've been to my parents' house! When I go round I have clear-outs of the out of date sweets, but haven't been able to get home for two years!

We used to live in Dublin. Our street alone my lot were hauling black bin bags full of stash. You would catch up with all the neighbours, kids from school and their parents. I would guess that 30% of all the houses got involved. It was amazing.

FixItUpChappie · 31/10/2021 15:06

Is that an actual thing people trick or treating on the wrong day because it's more convenient? I would assume folks were polite but unimpressed? Confused

buckeejit · 31/10/2021 17:57

We only went to the neighbours who had invited us & knew we were coming last night so nobody was unimpressed. All were polite & delighted to see the children & the out of date stuff was accidental!

I'm at my parents now & dm is dying so they've not organised any stuff for trick or treaters, (and not many local children). I've just handed out tunnocks snowballs to tonight's knockers!

the kids are picky this year....little boxes of jellybeans (halloween themed) are being boycotted as they are thought to be raisins!

frazzledasarock · 31/10/2021 18:08

We don’t go trick or treating but DH turned on the Eid lights and our littlies are thoroughly enjoying handing out sweets. All fresh and new sweets from M&S novelty eyeballs and brains and slime sweeties. I heard DH offer brains and kids going ewww. Made me laugh.

It makes the kids happy and it’s a lovely way of meeting the neighbours.

Currently the favourite costume was Spider-Man, the little boy apparently got loads of sweets from DD’s who found his costume ‘mazing 😆

15p and a full size bag of tangtastic

riotlady · 31/10/2021 18:17

Nothing but loveliness here! Although one house gave 3yo DD a full size packet of strawberry laces which I forgot about when I told her she could choose 2 things from her bucket to eat

DC2 has just returned with a basket full of goodies despite just knocking on half a dozen doors. Business has been slower due to torrential rain so the greedy brave souls that venture out are encouraged to take extras.

I now live in the US. Our neighborhood has thousands of children trick or treating - the whole city seems to come to here. It's great fun (in the past to give out treats, more recently to go trick or treating with our son) but the candy is AWFUL. Honestly, most American sweets and chocolates are foul. The worst? Something called candy-corn (orange, yellow, tastes of rubber) and tootsie rolls (looks like clay, tastes like poo).
I have a very sweet tooth and wish I could have some UK sweets. But my son enjoys it and many of the houses also have beverages (often mulled wine or warm apple cider) for the accompanying adults.

VitalsStable · 31/10/2021 18:26

I've just put all of the Mr Kipling diet angel cakes in the bucket as the greedy nuggets have taken handfuls so we're already through 2 bags of mini chocolate bars, 2 tubs of sweets and a tub of lollies.

HunkyPunk · 31/10/2021 18:30

So sorry to hear that, op. Flowers I'm sure the local children are very happy with tunnock's Smile

Ragwort · 31/10/2021 18:32

Surely your DC wouldn't be out until 11pm trick or treating Shock.

My DS is far too old to go trick or treating and fortunately after trying it once never bothered again but all the DC round here have been very nice and polite, I had some horrible (but in date) bags of chewy sweets to get rid of and overheard one of them saying 'wow, I've got a £1 bag of chewit's' Grin. I did also get rid of some Lindt bunnies left over from Easter but they seemed happy enough with them!

FelicityBeedle · 31/10/2021 18:37

We’ve just ordered emergency sweets on Deliveroo since we’ve both had a drink. Didn’t want to run out since one lad showed us the eggs he was carrying!

inpixiehollow · 31/10/2021 19:01

Are these people not prepared at all? I've got a huge bowl of sweets/chocolate all specially purchased and in date including treat size packets of dairymilk buttons, milky ways, lollies, moam chews etc. Had lots of trick or treaters in the last hour but gone very quiet now.. still got loads left!

buckeejit · 31/10/2021 20:11

Glad it's all going well!

The children finished knocking at 9pmish but then had to 'trade candy' and the grown ups had a few drinks so didn't leave until near 11pm. At least it's just once a year! @FelicityBeedle hope you got something else nice or an extra bottle of Wine with the deliveroo
