Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate Smile

In dull news I am fielding from my desk at work,

  • DS is about to clean the bathroom for the first time ever (TBF he is quite domesticated but we've only ever had one bathroom before)
  • ChampagneCat's regular food has been discontinued, now necessitating a forensic search for another that will live up to her exacting standards
  • DH did not know that toad in the hole was the same as sausages in Yorkshire pudding - this statement alone speaks volumes about DH
MissConductUS · 25/11/2021 17:47

Thanks, Lunar, consider yourself a virtual guest at mine. Smile

Thank you, Champagne. A cat food discontinuation is the stuff of nightmares. The last time it happened I went to the pet superstore and bought a variety of new options to be tested by my feline overlords friends.

In defense of your husband, I had no idea whatsoever what toad in the hole was, and was a bit anxious to find out, as it sounds a bit earthy.

I am waiting for the men to remove the bird from the oven so that I can get on with making the apple pie. We have a new digital meat thermometer so it is being watched closely.

In fairness though miss, you are American, DH has no such excuse!

MissConductUS · 25/11/2021 19:59

Fair point, Champagne.

Progress is being made. I discovered that my steaming basket for the carrots was missing one of its three legs. Fortunately, I located a backup.

Holiday mashed, pie and the stuffing are back in the oven. The stuffing needed a bit more time.

Oh Lemons, that’s awful and as others have said, you sound lovely and definitely deserve better.

IWanderedLonely · 25/11/2021 20:55

My sympathies Lemons Flowers Their loss.
Apologies to Math & ZZ for forgetting to include you in Thanksgiving wishes. Hope you are having a great day.
I know very little about Thanksgiving. Apart from the meal, what happens? Do you have family traditions that vary from family to family, like Christmas? Do you exchange gifts?

Lemonsandlemonade · 25/11/2021 21:01

Thanks all for the tea and sympathy.

@IWanderedLonely that’s a great question!

Am I right in thinking the Super Bowl is on sometime around Thanksgiving?

Lemonsandlemonade · 25/11/2021 21:44

Just googled for myself and super bowl is on in February 🙈😬

MissConductUS · 25/11/2021 22:02

We've just finished the washing up and are taking a break before the apple pie. You have to pace yourself with meals like this. Smile

Iwandered, we do not exchange gifts. That would be contrary to the spirit of the holiday, which is about gratitude for what you already have. It would also be an impractical encroachment on Christmas. Some families do additions to the meal, like a fish or pasta course for Italian Americans, but I think it's pretty standard other than that. The meal, followed by football, with people falling asleep on the couch, is about all there is to it.

Lemons, it's an understandable mistake. There is always lots of American football on the telly on Thanksgiving, probably because everyone is home to watch it. We're still heading into the playoffs at this point.

Yum MissConduct that looks amazing! This is making me look forward to Christmas dinner.

Sorry to hear you're being left out Lemons some people can be so nasty

Silkieschickens · 25/11/2021 22:18

That looks a wonderful meal MissC

Just back from ct scan and had a microwave pasta afterwards as it was late. Drinking lots of elderflower squash as had the contrast dye again and had a bath and now under my fleece duvet. Silkiecat is with DH.

Silkieschickens · 25/11/2021 22:21

Told DD school had put in its newsletter a special congratulations to her for coming best in school, beating the 2 years above as well, in the UKMT Senior Maths competition and through to next round. She was suitably embarassed. Smile

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 25/11/2021 22:42

Silkie That is great for your DD! Congratulations.
And taker care of yourself.
They let mir sit with my full bladder because the scan was delayed - but no accident.

Slightly maternally proud here DS got a 1- in English (exceeds expectations to a high degree) in his 'Klausur' under exam conditions. Tomorrow is bioloy and then he's is done with exams for this semester.

MissConductUS · 25/11/2021 23:50

Well done to your DD Silkie and to your DS, Prok.

One holiday tradition I forgot to mention earlier is watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. It was really back this year with lots of new character balloons.

Well done your DD, Silkies!
And she cooked too Star

Congratulations to your DS, Prok Wine
Not too long to go now before you can be sprung.

We're waiting for the turkey and roast potatoes. Everything else is done and staying cold, bar the gravy and green beans. The cinnamon rolls turned out well and DS cooked the rest of breakfast, with The Clash blasting on the Alexa.

Autumn is leaf cleanup season here, and it's in full swing. As a result, I have a hi viz sighting to report from yesterday. They clean up the leaves into modified garbage trucks, accompanied by crews in hi viz bearing a leaf blower, rakes, and tools to lean on while the leaf blower man and two others do the work.

mathanxiety · 26/11/2021 00:06

Lemons, that is incredibly rude and immature of them. Why grown women engage in petty schoolyard games into adulthood is beyond me.

Champagneforeveryone · 26/11/2021 00:21

I received a parcel today, DH told me on the phone. He's useless at espionage so all he could tell me was the package was black and the name of the courier. He hadn't felt it, shook it or even peeked in a corner Hmm

Convinced it was bound to be something terribly exciting I insisted he opened it while on the phone to me. After a suitable period of dropping the phone, talking with the speaker to his ear and much rustling of packaging, the treasure was revealed as the spares for the bastard G-Tech hoover

Silkieschickens · 26/11/2021 00:38

Congrats to your DS Prok and congrats to you for helping him to achieve so well. Hopefully you can have some celebratory chocolates.

Glad you had lovely Thanksgivings MissC and Math

Duolingo will now be as cross with me as Silkiecat is currently with DH for sleeping at 12.38am. So I will pay it attention. I have to drink lots after the dye though can sleep tomorrow instead.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/11/2021 02:24

Thanks for the Thanksgiving wishes - we actually celebrated a day early this year, with one daughter home from college but the other one away at her boyfriend's, plus two grandparents visiting from the UK.

We ate beef instead of turkey, and there was no stuffing at all, so really it was a bit of a cheat. We did have two pies though. I think it was my 15th Thanksgiving? I still don't think I've got the hang of them, but I quite like them as they are - very peaceful and low-pressure.

I'm actually going to the Apple Store with DD first thing tomorrow to battle the Black Friday crowds. She wants an iPad and there's some special deal on. I think that'll be my first actual Black Friday trip to the shops.

We're also going to The Nutcracker this weekend, which to me is the start of Christmas.

I'm contemplating buying some panto tickets. It's the first pantomime I've ever heard of in the US, and it seems rude not to.

Lemonsandlemonade · 26/11/2021 08:45

Well done @Prokupatuscrakedatus and @Silkieschickens to your DS and DD that’s really super.

I would love to learn another language. I speak fluent Welsh and English and have a A grade in GCSE Spanish to which I remember one phrase ( don’t ask me to write it) but I remember how to say : because it’s very interesting here.

DH has a cold has done several LFT which are negative.

Just in case Covid strikes at Christmas in Casa Lemon I am debating getting a duck as a back up if we have to isolate.

Lemonsandlemonade · 26/11/2021 08:46

Meant to add is Black Friday as big in America as it’s portrayed to be by British media?

KittenKong · 26/11/2021 08:47

It’s bad enough here - I had over 30 emails this morning with amazing special offers...

Nydj · 26/11/2021 08:58

Congratulations to your DD @Silkieschickens and your DS @Prokupatuscrakedatus - they are both amazing.

Good luck for the Black Friday shopping @ZZTopGuitarSolo and anyone else thinking of venturing out.

I have a question for those trying and placate the green frog - do you complete all the lessons on each topic before moving on to the next one or do you complete level one on each available topic before moving onto the level two lessons? I am doing the latter (a level at a time) but am not sure that this is the best way to go about it.

We have panto booked at a local theatre but am not sure whether we will be going as I need to check with them about their covid safety measures first. When we went to a west end show in London a few weeks ago, no one n the audience was wearing a mask after entering the theatre and thee were no empty seats between groups of tickets - they did keep the place ventilated so we were all very cold!

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/11/2021 09:13

@nydj
I have been to some Duocons (where they explain the didactic concepts - which are very sound and I regret being old. There are some amazing job offers in Berlin.) and it is really up to you.
I have some languages where I have completed or tested into a complete tree and now I try to get everything to 5, and some where I do not go forward without having completed to 5.
They recommend to do 3-4 sections at the same time, because it sticks better.

(.... and Duo is an owl...)

Nydj · 26/11/2021 09:26

Thank you @Prokupatuscrakedatus. And yes, of course he is a wise owl - this is why I never put ‘having a good eye for detail’ on any of my CVs!
