Never had this happen before. Have they moved Halloween? Small dressed up child with adult in tow. Yes my house is decorated but pumpkin not lit as it is not Halloween yet!

@anormalperson

Oh jeez , about to take mine out for reasons mentioned up thread , weather / school night 😬
But it's not Halloween!
anormalperson · 30/10/2021 20:42

'But it's not Halloween'

Yeah, I am aware of that but everyone here seemed grand with it . There were loads out and people only go to the decorated houses 🤷🏼‍♀️
Everyone was lovely

Inthebelljar · 30/10/2021 20:44

It’s on a school night most years 🥴

Literally. Don't understand this as a reason.

We had a couple, they were told very nicely we didn't have anything in yet and come back tomorrow. Only a small lie - DH had hidden the sweets up high and I really don't need my three year old realising there's a big tub of haribo in the house any earlier than necessary! We also haven't decorated yet.

Incidentally, here it's unusual that Halloween is a school night as it's usually during midterm. It's midterm this week and a lot of the schools seem to be staying off til Tuesday. I suspect because they don't want to deal with exhausted kids who were up late getting their sugar rush!

Partyowl · 30/10/2021 21:04

Hallowe’en is 31 October.
The end.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/10/2021 21:13

Seems to be happening tonight here too.

Bad weather plus it being a school night (who wants to try and get a kid in bed and then up for school after a night of fun and sugar?!) and there being an extra hour tonight/tomorrow if they are tired.

Makes sense to me.

That said there is a rule....no decs, no knocking.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/10/2021 21:15

And Halloween is usually within half term here, so it being on a school night is actually very unusual.

hiredandsqueak · 30/10/2021 21:15

I've just had two teens that were neither cute nor dressed up. I give to no trick or treaters anyway but before Halloween, after 9pm and not dressed up is taking the proverbial IMO.

StormyCornishSeas · 30/10/2021 21:15

@IDontThinkSoNo

Halloween is on a school night 5 out of 7, I just don’t get why this year people are doing it on Saturday
Depends because if Halloween is on a school night that might mean it's a half term week night. Especially Wednesday onwards
TheBlackHeart · 30/10/2021 21:38

Totally agree.

Not in Scotland, never. Half term is long gone here.

MrsAmaretto · 30/10/2021 22:32

In the 1980 and early 90s we weren’t allowed to go guising in the village on a Sunday. It was simply not done and nobody did! Being Scottish Halloween was a big deal but that rule wasn’t broken.

modgepodge · 30/10/2021 22:33

Someone on our local fb group said when it’s a Sunday you can’t do that cos it’s God’s day - fairly sure most churches don’t endorse Halloween whatever day it’s on!!

I popped out today around 7 and hardly any houses decorated and no kids out. 2/3 years ago I remember the street buzzing and lots of decorated houses so I assume people are waiting for tomorrow.

modgepodge · 30/10/2021 22:37

Woah, loads of people claiming the sabbath thing?!? Halloween is like an anti Christian festival, no?! All the religious people I know don’t allow their kids to do it at all.

StormyCornishSeas · 30/10/2021 22:44

Ahhh ok! Just that in 2019 when Halloween fell on a Thursday the kids were in half term around there. They're normally back by Bonfire Night but if the 5th is a Monday then it's the 1st day back. Some schools are on half term next week too around here.
PyongyangKipperbang · 30/10/2021 22:44

I never understood the anti christian thing. Halloween is All Hallows Eve...the eve of All Saints Day.

But it wasnt always. It was a celebration of the end of summer and start of the darker months and a way of chasing off spirits that would roam the earth otherwise. It wasnt until the 7th century that the church named 1 November as All Saints Day....so blame the church if you like! Another christian appropriation of Pagan tradition.

I would say its not anti christian but anti pagan

Doomscrolling · 30/10/2021 22:52

Had one small group.

Told them to come back tomorrow. No o e had Jack o’lanterns out.

EvilRingahBitch · 30/10/2021 23:12

We had one cute set of moppets with their mum at about 9pm tonight which was weird. We told them to go away because we had Covid (actually true)

nocoolnamesleft · 30/10/2021 23:14

Had one group come round despite no decorations out, porch light being off, and it being 24 hours early. Grrr.

SmellyOldOwls · 31/10/2021 03:46

@liveforsummer

Halloween is frequently a school night - not sure why it's different just because it's a Sunday rather than a Wednesday. You don't then go out on the previous Saturday or following Friday . Will definitely ignore the door tonight
It is usually on a school night but during half term so no school the next day.
Explosivefarts · 31/10/2021 03:56

@Triphazards

In this part of Scotland, you don't go guising on the Sabbath, so it's tonight.
Not in my part of Scotland . Never heard of that before
GiltEdges · 31/10/2021 04:15

@julieca

Our street have decided via whatsapp than trick or treat is tomorrow night.
That's because it is tomorrow night.., that's not just your street Grin
SummerOrAutumn · 31/10/2021 04:19

We had one trick or treater last night. DD & I were watching Strictly when doorbell went. Dad & his DD explained they were going round Saturday because she was going back to her mum's on Sunday so wouldn't get to do t&t then. Handed over sweets. They were the only caller. Fully expect more tonight. We usually get lots early on.

Crazycatlady83 · 31/10/2021 04:26

It's forecast thunderstorms on t&t night, so made sense for people to come out tonight

liveforsummer · 31/10/2021 06:22

@SmellyOldOwls it's absolutely never over- we've been back to school a week now and we had a late half term this year. Often we've been back 2 weeks. I've also never heard of the no guising on the sabbath, either where I live now or the area I grew up. It must be limited to a fairly small part of Scotland.
