can anyone else not eat anything with onion or garlic powder?

Bit random, but really bothering me. Over the last couple of years I seem to have become incredibly sensitive to onion and garlic powder in any food. It tastes incredibly strong, even in tiny quantities, and the after taste lingers for literally days. It is ruining foods I used to enjoy, and just seems to get worse and worse. Anyone else experienced this?

My friend’s mum now has this after having covid. She cannot bear any foods with either in them.

SequinnedShawl · 30/10/2021 17:11

Onion gives me roaring heartburn in a very short time after eating it. It's a pity as I used to love cheese and onion or egg and onion sandwiches! Sad

ItsAllMumboJumbo · 30/10/2021 17:15

Yes, it makes me feel sick, odd I know

I avoid garlic powder as it repeats on me the next day (yuck), but could happily consume a bulb of fresh garlic in something and have no such issues.

chaingain · 30/10/2021 17:18

It’s so strange. It seems to be getting worse. And I’m steadily realise just how much stuff it’s in!!

You poor thing! That must dramatically limit what you can eat.

carlydooly · 30/10/2021 17:20

I had exactly this while pregnant. It was miserable and I sympathise.

You never realise how many things have these ingredients in until you are intolerant to them. I remember brushing my teeth to try and get rid of the horrid aftertaste.

Thankfully it stopped once I'd given birth and didn't return until I was pregnant again. Given you've had this a couple of years, I think you can rule that out Grin

Kenneldogsrock · 30/10/2021 17:21

Yes, and it repeats on me for days and upsets my digestion. Even the slightest hint of it.

RandomMess · 30/10/2021 17:22

I have had this my whole life.

Fresh onion or garlic softened then cooked in a sauce is fine but that's it. Also the rest of the allium family.

It's a nightmare for eating out.

Reconstituted onion is the worst- convenience meals, burgers etc etc just don't go there anymore.

Ordered a lovely risotto from an Italian, they put bloody chives on it!!!! Angry

RandomMess · 30/10/2021 17:24

Very occasionally I give in to eating crisps - bacon frazzles or quavers. Am then ill for 12 hours and very much regret it. Not succumbed to that for years!

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2021 17:24

I have to take an antacid before I eat onions or they kill me all night ! I'm blaming age as I do for everything else

greenlynx · 30/10/2021 17:24

I can’t eat garlic and onion because of terrible indigestion afterwards. I just decided for myself that I’m intolerant to them and that’s all. It’s for quite a while now so I’m used to it.
My DD has got similar problem with them so it might be something hereditary.

wetpebbles · 30/10/2021 17:25

Yes both myself and dd are sensitive to everything onion

Mrsjayy · 30/10/2021 17:26

I use squeezey garlic so I don't know if it has an effect on me .

Redhound · 30/10/2021 18:09

I'm intolerant to garlic which make life very difficult as they shove it in everything! I always have to read the small print or I will have an upset stomach the following day. Apparently it's the no 1 food item for intolerance..

Dailywalk · 30/10/2021 18:17

My DH has ibs and onion and garlic really triggers his symptoms. It’s best for all of us if he avoids them! Confused

KittenKong · 30/10/2021 18:18

It can hurt your tummy - with me it just hangs around my breath for ages (poo!)

Rabblesthecat · 30/10/2021 18:21

Have you had covid? It’s a well known side effect and affects me badly

Rabblesthecat · 30/10/2021 18:21

I can eat garlic but don’t like the smell - onions just smell like rancid flesh and the taste is worse

Rabblesthecat · 30/10/2021 18:22

I’ve gone from eat anything anywhere to scouring menus to see if I can get the onion left out. Had to remove lost Indian and Italians

However as a keen cook I’ve learnt how to cook most things without onion

chaingain · 30/10/2021 18:32

I love onions and garlic 😢 or I used to at least.

I hate onion and garlic powder. I can taste whatever they use to make them long life.

ghostmouse · 30/10/2021 18:44

Yes! I love it but omg my stomach and the farts afterward Confused

I had onion gravy with my bangers and mash last Sunday. Did not end well

memememe · 31/10/2021 19:26

Yes since I've had covid. I can taste it in everything including beans and things with stock in them. It doesn't taste like onion/garlic though it tastes horrific. It upstmt tummy really badly as well. And I can smell it in my wee and my sweat. (No one else can smell it on my thank god!) I don't enjoy eating anymore it's making my life very miserable.
