Covid loss of taste and smell!

Tested positive earlier this week and lost my sense of taste and smell yesterday, which is just sooo strange. And a bit upsetting actually

Please tell me it only lasts a few days?! I've seen stuff online saying it could be months Sad

I'm on week 4 and still cant taste or smell a thing. No really fussed about lack of taste but I'm missing smelling nice things.

1309username · 29/10/2021 14:46

Mine lasted around a week. This was with 0% taste of smell.

This was 5 weeks ago and I would say my sense of smell now is 60%, which I’m not very bothered about.

Taste is like 90%, I can taste everything now, but it always seems like it needs a bit of salt.

I feel for you, I hated those days of feeling rubbish and not be able to cheer myself up with food.

I tested pos and lost my smell and taste a week ago today.

Yesterday i could faintly smell onion when my eldest DD was cooking! I was so excited. First thing i've smelt for a week. Today i could veeeery faintly smell my deodorant. I think.

I was violently sniffing at my shampoo bottle earlier. Nothing :(

Taste? Nothing :(

Weird isn't it OP? I've got a bar of chocolate sitting in the fridge and usually it would have been woofed up last saturday night (with the JD which i also didn't bother with).

I worry i smell! I don't usually smell but how do you tell now?!?! (I'm showering everyday.)

Plus point - picking up the cat poo no longer makes me gag Grin

Fingers crossed for everyone suffering with this.

Oh no! Like you say, @1309username , I'm upset I can't stuff my face to make isolation more bearable! Well, I can, but there's absolutely zero point!

I'd better lose a nice chunk of weight!

My tense of taste came back after about 2-3 weeks.

Trinacham · 29/10/2021 15:19

I had covid in August. My taste has come back and I can mostly smell nice smells.. I think that I'm not as sensitive to smell as I was though. Bad smells have not come back to me though (unless I really sniff!) Could be seen as a good thing but I have 2 housecats and I like to know when they've been - if you get my drift, as I don't like a smelly home!

sleepinglionsroar · 29/10/2021 15:37

Been out a couple of weeks and occasionally I think I can smell something, but can't taste it Sad I think I might be imagining it.

RhubarbTea · 29/10/2021 16:09

Mine came back after around 10--12 days, I was so happy as I also worried it might be months. It's not 100% but improving all the time.

Kezzie200 · 29/10/2021 17:19

My friends who lost smell and taste have all got it back but quite sometime after their recovery from other symptoms. Some took a couple of months. I don't know of anyone who still cannot smell or taste, which is encouraging.

Suzysuz · 29/10/2021 17:22

Taste came back after couple of weeks, smell isn't back fully even 11 months on.... I can smell if it's strong and close but otherwise not - I'm grateful though as reading about other long covid effects it's much more manageable than some other horrible conditions people have been left with.

This is my problem, not arsed about taste but my god, I've realised how important my sense of smell is.

pictish · 29/10/2021 21:18

This is me now…isolating and no sense of taste or smell. Hope it comes back soon.

RolloTomassi · 29/10/2021 21:24

Taste took a week to return, was very relieved!

A month later and I'm still waiting for smell... I can just about get strong scents by actively sniffing (ie a diffuser bottle), but no wafts in the air, or food or husband's aftershave etc. I do worry I could smell and not know it! On the other hand, wiping DS' bum is far more pleasant 😆

Serena1977 · 29/10/2021 21:32

Me, dh and kids all have covid at the moment.

No smell or taste which I'm finding very sad which is ridiculous considering how much worse covid has been for others.

Food would really help to cheer me up after a ruined half term break.

PivotPivotPivottt · 29/10/2021 22:05

My taste was only a few days but my smell was over a week. My sense of smell went first totally gone couldn't smell a thing. Then my taste gradually reduced. I could still get the sensation from toothpaste, salt etc but everything else was bland. It took longer for my smell to come back but it was gradual.

Ruth2009 · 29/10/2021 22:25

I had covid 3 weeks ago. I was really upset by the loss of smell and taste. It took away any enjoyment of food, I couldn't bear to cook and the thought of all food made me feel sick. Just when you want to comfort eat. I lost about half a stone, but sure u will put it all back on again!
It only lasted about 5 days for me, although still not back 100%, I still can't stomach coffee.

SpikyHatePotato · 29/10/2021 22:25

I tested positive last Christmas. Neither taste not smell are back 100%, both are rather weak and a bit 'off'. I did a month or so of recognition retraining, so testing or smelling strong things that I am very familiar with, eg coffee/vanilla/lavender, orange juice/chocolate, which helped a bit.

But the worst thing is that meat/animal protein smells and tastes weird. Sort of chemically, and if someone is cooking, it always smells buttery/garlicky. I've mostly gone vegetarian as a result.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 29/10/2021 23:32

I got Covid 4 weeks ago. I normally have a very powerful sense of smell but it’s gone and my sense of taste with it. In the last few days, I’ve maybe got 10-20% back but it sucks. My husband had Covid a year ago and couldn’t smell things any more. I used to take the pied out of him - less so now…

Claire1stPost · 30/10/2021 06:31

Both me and DP had covid in Jan 2021, I was 12wks pregnant so didn't really mind not being able to smell or taste anything lol (had horrible constant nausea) both my smell and taste came back within a week or so, my DP taste came back just over a week later however his smell has just come back this week so 9 months for him. He could smell certain things but said everything just smelled the same and not pleasant. He said he can now finally smell the ''new baby smell'' off our 12wk old baby girl 🥰 hope it comes back quickly for you
