Hello,

Im days into my labour and I am feeling that cold sore is starting to appear. It is not the first time, but what about my newborn? Can he catch it if i have it? is it dangerous?

Talk with your midwife (ring the triage team?).

As far as I understand it (not an expert but a friend gets coldsores and her baby got very, very sick as a newborn because she didn't realise she was about to get one and the baby caught the virus) it can be extremely dangerous for small babies but there are steps you can take to minimise the risk they will catch it. But you need proper medical advice, and also to make the midwives aware that you a) get coldsores and b) believe you are about to have an outbreak. They will be able to guide you on what to do.

Good luck with your delivery and congratulations on your impending arrival!

P.S. My friends older child never caught the virus so it is possible to prevent transmission, but you need proper advice on what to do/not do and also on the signs to look out for in your baby.

I’ve heard that coldsores can be potentially serious. Check with Dr/midwife just to be sure
