Starting a new job wfh - what happens on day 1?

I start a new job on Monday and the role is working from home. I've got my phone, laptop & login and obviously have an idea of the role based on job description & interviews, but 8:30 Monday I'll be at my desk and ready but not the foggiest what to actually do Confused.
Should I email today and ask if there's a plan for day 1? I've got a fantastic induction week planned the following week but can't twiddle my thumbs until then! This is a newly created role and not something I've done before (which they know) & whilst I have plenty of ideas I want to implement, it's those initial few days I'm unsure about.

Weird that they've got your induction booked for week2. Wonder if your manager is off your first week.

I'd probably spend some time reading through their policies and procedures, maybe email the team you are working in and ask if anyone fancies a quick cuppa together at 2pm or something to say a hello.

If you have a specific area, go in and look through all the shared folders and see what they do, how it's done etc.

Really they ought to have some kind of induction plan for you. I would expect your manager or another colleague to meet with you virtually when you start and talk you through things.

The induction is week 2 as there are 3 of us starting the same role (albeit different areas) but one doesn't start until 8th so presumably wanted to wait until we were all there. I can see group emails and company policies etc but feels a bit lazy just sitting reading for a week and can't see more than a day's work

Have you asked them what are meant to be doing the first week? What did they advise? If they haven't then you need to ask them....

You might end up logging in to find emails with stuff to do

We tend to email our new starters with the links to things like online training courses, forms they need to sign and return etc

I started a new job 6 months ago and did exactly this. I had a meeting with my line manager and senior manager for about an hour then had to do some mandatory training and read through policies and procedures. Good luck in your new role x

Thanks everyone I emailed HR who forwarded my email to my new line manager - she's asked me to call once I'm logged in to have a chat and talk me through getting set up on the system, accessing the company files and database etc so feeling a little less panicked Grin
