Lighthearted - what things have your toddler said or done that have broken your heart?

Inspired by the fact my already unaffectionate nearly 2-year old just about threw my heart into the bin tonight.

We always have a cuddle in her bed while she has her milk. But tonight I tried to hug her and was met with an annoyed grunty-cry and her turning away, so I said “oh sorry I thought you wanted a cuddle; so you want mummy to go?”

She said “yeah.” So I thought I’d check since she was crying and hoping she misheard me so I asked her again “you want me to go yes?” She said “yeah” so I tucked her in and left her alone.

She called me in once she’d finished her milk and said “night night mummy!” I said “night night darling” and tried once more to give her a hug as she seemed happier now.. but no. I got “no, night night mummy” while pushing me away.

What did I do to deserve this kind of emotional punishment from my child? Is it because I’m growing her a sibling? Does she already know my attention will be divided next year? Is it because it’s a boy and she wanted a sister? Is it because I didn’t buy her enough Christmas and birthday today this evening? I guess we’ll never know the reason. But upon almost crying to my own mum about this I was met with “wait and hear what she calls you when she’s 13, circle of life I call it”

So maybe it’s good old fashioned karma?!

Feel free to share the things your own children have done to make you question their love for you.. it might make me feel better knowing I’m not the only worst mum in the world sometimes 😂

lighthearted!

@TeddyBeans

He told his auntie to drive off without me when I got out of the car to put some stuff in the bin 🤦‍♀️
😂😂😂😂

I only have a 5 month old so clearly have nothing to add but I really do love some of the things I've read on this thread😂 it's so interesting how toddlers have such personalities at such a young age. Can't wait to hear what our DD will have to say to us

AlwaysLatte · 28/10/2021 21:40

One funny story I remember though it was directed at my mum rather than me. We were driving home from a petting zoo having had a lovely bonding 3-generations afternoon and my 4 year old said to my mum 'when are you going to die, grandma?' Well my mum did almost die laughing and still laughs about it 9 years later!

My nearly two year old regularly pats my belly and says 'mummy's bum' 🙄

PintOfBovril · 28/10/2021 21:54

DS2: " Dada is a teacher"
DH: "that's right, and what is mama?"
DS2: "Mama is a bin"

3 year old niece to me - "(my baby brother) loves you, aunty Dorothy"

Her mum - "Do you love Aunty Dorothy?"

Niece with very apologetic face - "No, I'm sorry"

Tiredtiredtired100 · 28/10/2021 22:00

My toddler spent the day with his grandparents (who he sees all the time). I walked in at the end of the day and he burst into tears and started trying to hide as he didn’t want to go home. I felt awful.

I’m also very glad he doesn’t do this at childcare or I would look like an abusive parent.

Haha that reminds me of a scene from outnumbered where the annoying auntie Angela says “let’s play a fun game! Who can make up the biggest lie” And the little girl says “I like auntie Angela”
ineedsun · 28/10/2021 22:06

I bought a new outfit and had a make up trial in boots. DS (about 5 at the time so not a toddler) said ‘you look like one of those women who doesn’t look after their children properly’ Hmm

Bumply · 28/10/2021 22:08

Nursery staff: congratulations on your pregnancy
Me: I'm not pregnant. What made you think I was?
Nursery staff: ds (aged 3) told us
Me to ds: why did you say that?
Ds: because you're fat enough to be (runs away giggling)

SmellyOldOwls · 28/10/2021 22:12

I sat beside my 4 year old tonight.

DS: I smell something
Me: what does it smell like?
DS: smells like mummy
Me: well is that good or bad?
DS: bad! You're stinky mummy you need a bath

Tbf I had just farted but disturbing to realise that's my signature scent Blush

PatMustardsBigTool · 28/10/2021 22:14

@LadyCleathStuart

DD(5): I look so like you Mummy don't I?

Me: yes darling you do

DD: only I don't have wrinkles

Me: I don't have wrinkles!

DD: yes you do, all over your scabby face.

Woah 😂

My eldest girl told me she loves daddy more than me, just randomly has we watched TV, absolutely broke me.
Her dad is useless has her 3hrs on a sunday (when it suits)

Merrilee · 28/10/2021 22:22

When I asked my granddaughter what job does her daddy do, she told me he doesn't do much except talk to his laptop. She wants him to do a better job like a binman. (GD loves bin day)

My son in law is a lawyer and yes he spends a lot of time talking to his laptop at the moment.

Mydogisagentleman · 28/10/2021 22:25

Our DD told me, with ll seriousness ‘I hate you’ she had been watching fining memo virtually on a loop and it always made me run when he says that to his dad. She clearly saw how much it upset me.
She also wrote on a piece of tissue box, that we still have ‘I hate mum’
When I asked her why, she denied it. Since she is an only child I can’t imagine who else would have done it.
She’s. Pretty well dusted 20 year old now

Mydogisagentleman · 28/10/2021 22:25

OMFG goodness, so many typos

DD1 aged 4: mummy I love you and I think you're pretty even when other people think you're not
Me: Who thinks I'm not pretty?
DD1: My friends

So savage!

PiesNotGuys · 28/10/2021 22:31

Why are you crying Mummy?
You remember, DS, because Grandma died.
That was yesterday!

riotlady · 28/10/2021 22:32

When 3yo DD is done with her dad (regardless of time of day) she goes “ok, time for work now?”

4intheCorner · 28/10/2021 22:36

This was one made me well up the other day...

Driving along in the car

DS: I can't wait until I'm an adult and I can drive
Me: Me, yeah that will be awesome but don't wish your childhood away.
DS: When I'm older I will move away
Me: 🥺😭

After much negotiation we agreed he will live next door to me when he's older 🤣

CantThinkOfaUserNameAgain · 28/10/2021 22:39

DS was 3… my 18 year old
sister was staying with us. He looked at her and said «your boobies are like my mummy’s boobies…… long and falling down» 😂

Her reply «geez thanks buddy»

I had BF him for 2 years so mine had taken a battering but could not be compared to hers.

drum123 · 28/10/2021 22:42

This is a sightly different sort of story, but it certainly made my heart ache!
My then 4 year old grandson: 'Nana, where's your mummy?'
Me : 'my mummy's dead, darling.
Grandson:' Where's your daddy? '
Me :'he's dead too.'
Grandson: 'Where's your Nana?'
Me: 'she's dead as well.'
Grandson: 'Where's your grandad?'
Me: 'he's also dead.'
Long pause.
Grandson: 'who looks after you then?'

Made me cry a bit because it's so true!

PivotPivotPivottt · 28/10/2021 22:48

@SickAndTiredAgain

Me to DD: I love you! DD: I love Amy

Amy is her friend from nursery.

One from the other day. I put her to bed, kissed her cheek and as I stood up she wiped her cheek with her hand saying “NO KISS! I WIPE IT OFF”

My 4 year old does the same when I tell her I love her! Now she doesn't say her best friends name but she replies "I love lots of peoples" HmmGrin.

She's also stopped kisses recently which makes me a bit sad. Before she always wanted kisses and cuddles but now she hates kisses and cuddles are given occasionally (half arsed cuddles at that!). She will kiss my older daughter on the cheek at bedtime but no one else. She wouldn't give her a kiss tonight though because I was in the room!

@SmallWaistFatFace

My nearly two year old regularly pats my belly and says 'mummy's bum' 🙄
Playing 'jelly on a plate' with my DS and he wobbled my tummy and the roll of flab above my waist and said, "You've got TWO jellies, Mummy!"
EdithGrantham · 28/10/2021 22:51

Not my child but a child in the nursery class I took over teaching after the Christmas holidays when the previous teacher retired. This conversation took place when I'd been there a term and a half- Child: I miss Mrs Smith, when's she coming back?
Me: Oh that's nice but Mrs Smith is having some nice time off now and if she came back I wouldn't be able to be your teacher any more
Child: Well I wouldn't miss you!
