To hang or to fold? Choosing an internal design for a wardrobe

Hello MNetters. At last I can design built-in cupboards. Please give me the benefit of your experience. Would you opt for more hanging space or shelves or drawers? Any other tips for me ?

TIA

I got those pull out trouser hangers and regret it every day. I wish I’d had drawers for my trousers/jeans/leggings.
Definitely a rail for tops/dresses/jackets

My preference is to hang anything with arms and fold anything with legs (skirts are also hung).

So I want mostly hanging space in a wardrobe plus storage for shoes and bags.

If I didn't have a separate chest of drawers then I guess 2/3 hanging to 1/3 shelves/drawers maybe?

Thanks for these ! What about T-shirts, which are what I wear most days. Hang or fold ?

Well I hang them. And as I put away all the bloody clothes in this house, by default they're hung in dh & the ds's wardrobes too.

I just find that it's easier to see what you have, they stay uncreased, and mean that they're less likely to end up stuffed in a ball when ds1 rifles through his drawers for something.

I got all fired up by Mari Kondo and have been meticulously folding the damn things! I do keep thinking how much easier it would be to just hang them. Am encouraged to find you've arrived at the same conclusion @ditalini

Hang:
Dresses
Jackets
Skirts
Fancy tops
Smart coats

Fold:
Trousers (shelf)
T-shirts
Jumpers (shelf)
Shirts
Fitness wear

Drawers
Under garments including bras
Pjs

Smart, occasional shoes in a shelf at the bottom

I hate wrestling with coat hangers!

I suppose it falls to personal preference and what's in ones wardrobe but personally I would always prefer more hanging space. You always seem to end up needing or wanting to hang more than you think, cramped rails are awful, and I prefer to hang most things to avoid creasing.

A chest of drawers or under bed storage can always be easily accommodated in most rooms, a rail or second wardrobe later down the line, can't.
