Apostrophe/No apostrophe? Help me please

I volunteered to look through a draft copy of a handbook for new residents for our flats.

One page is titled:
Resident‘s Checklist

Is this right? To me it doesn’t need an apostrophe but I’m not great at this sort of thing. Thank you.

Hmm, for a single occupant that would be correct but for multiple residents it would be residents’. One of the rare occasions where eith will be both correct and incorrect!? Grin

If it's for all the residents it's Residents' Checklist.
If just one it's Resident's Checklist.

Svolvaer · 26/10/2021 18:50

It’s a checklist FOR the residents, (rather than OF the residents) so it belongs to them and therefore needs an apostrophe. As there are presumably multiple residents I’d say the apostrophe should be Residents’ rather than Resident’s

Agree with @MatildaTheCat and @LeekChic. Depends if you're addressing one single resident, or a group of residents.

CagneyNYPD1 · 26/10/2021 18:51

Resident's Checklist - singular so a checklist belonging to or applicable to one resident.

Residents' Checklist - plural so applicable to all the residents in question.

Residents’ Checklist

SallyOMalley · 26/10/2021 18:52

I'd say 'Residents' checklist' or 'Checklist for Residents'.

emmathedilemma · 26/10/2021 18:53

If you’re not sure, go with “checklist for residents” Grin

Thanks. The handbook will be given to each new resident who moves into the block (new build so every tenant will be new and will get a copy of the checklist when the block is ready for people to move in). So should that resident's handbook then ie the handbook belonging to the resident?
