How much to paint a room?

Been quoted £400 for small box room- 8x10 feet , paint walls( just over paint not stripping the paper or anything) and ceiling - paint skirting board and door frame. In the south east, this seems steep to me or is it the going rate ?

Wow!

We had featured wallpaper done in 5 rooms including a big living room and tricky hallway. Two days work, £280

fedup078 · 26/10/2021 17:07

I paid £150 (labour) for the entire hallway , stairs and lobby .
£400 seems very steep for a small room

I paid £500 earlier this year to have large room painted including ceilings and skirting. Also quite a lot of prep to walls such as filling and sanding. I also had one wall papered. All paint was included in the price. I'm in South East London.

Hi, at the moment decorators are charging crazy amounts. It could be that they don’t want to charge less as they can get other bigger jobs and this is minimum to make it worth giving up other work. It also depends on whether there is shortage in your very local area in which case you either wait 4-5 months or pay over the odds to the more expensive tradespeople who have less demand,
I’m not surprised given quotes I got.
It is just one small room are you really sure you can’t do it yourself? By the time the painter has a slot you could have spent a couple of weekends and done it. I know it’s a hassle (I’ve just finished 6 rooms in 4 months), but I really couldn’t face those prices . It would cost you less than £100 probably even with buying all equipment

Generally I pay about 150 a day in the south east

Often what happens op is if someone really doesn’t want to do the job they will bump the price up to a level where it’s acceptable to do the job to them.

MoreThanAnOffDay · 26/10/2021 17:40

Average is 150 a day. If all prepped is say 1.5 to 2 days max.

Pokhora · 26/10/2021 17:57

We have just been quoted £700 to paint a small utility. It is a bit fiddly with some boxing in to prep and paint but still a lot more than I anticipated. The painter said it would take him 4 to 5 days. We are in the SE

Bluntness100 · 26/10/2021 17:58

Eight foot by ten foot is tiny, it’s max a days work.

RussianSpy101 · 26/10/2021 17:59

@Pokhora 4/5 days???? What?

We’ve just had some painting done which took 5 days; 4 bedrooms and a small study, 4 walls and ceilings in each.

Somanysocks · 26/10/2021 18:17

So 2 days at 150, and 100 materials? You people want something for nothing.

Proper prep, allowing filler etc to dry, 2? coats of paint, undercoat and topcoat woodwork. Walls have to be dry before cutting in woodwork. It takes time to do a proper job.

Neighbours have paid £1500 for hall, stairs and landing.
