Opinions on this cutlery?

Looking for opinions on this cutlery, please? Style, rather than price etc. I've already bought it but it can be returned. Just want to be sure it's not awful!

Its not remarkable (in a good way).

mrsm43s · 26/10/2021 15:54

I also agree the Willow style linked to is much, much nicer, and less dated.

@grey12, I think that the Harley is "dated", whereas your MILs is more "vintage". I can see the Harley going with stuff like the 1980s Eternal Beau crockery, and it screams dated 80s/90s to me, where as your MILs would go with Willow pattern plates or bone china with rose prints and wouldn't be out of place in a vintage tea room.

It's completely inoffensive

Changed my mind, I just saw that price is only for one of each item. That's very offensive!

TuftyMarmoset · 26/10/2021 16:09

I looked at that one in John Lewis and personally didn’t like how chunky the handles were on the knives. They are big but hollow and I just didn’t like that.

PigletJohn · 26/10/2021 16:10

Harley is a classic 1920's art deco design. It is my second favourite.

Arthur Price is a top quality (high price) manufacturer. That particular line is I think made in a Far East factory to their design and specification.

your set is 18/10 stainless, probably the best all-round material, and will keep its shine and colour better.

The AP cutlery is a more heavyweight construction. In particular, if you compare the knife handles to other brands, you will find they are fatter and fill the hand better. You will notice the other items, especially teaspoons, feel heavier than usual.

A very good choice though rather expensive. If you can afford them, no problem.

Crinkle77 · 26/10/2021 16:11

Eh? It's just cutlery?

BarbaraofSeville · 26/10/2021 16:11

I don't like it and think it looks quite old fashioned, but surely it's whether or not you like it that matters?

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 26/10/2021 16:21

We got given a set like this as a wedding present. Dh likes them but the rest of us find them too big and uncomfortable to use, so use some cheap Sainsbury’s ones instead.

Lorw · 26/10/2021 16:21

Pricey for parish cutlery (parish is the group of cutlery it belongs to, like kings, dubarry etc and is normally used by restaurants) but it is 18/10 and will stay shinier for longer, even just having 6 of each piece would cost over £200

I think for that kind of money I’d rather buy Villeroy & Boch but if you like it that is the main thing 😁

PigletJohn · 26/10/2021 16:26

on "old fashioned" I've heard it said that "old fashioned" is what your parents had; "vintage" is what your grandparents had, and "antique" is before that. I think Art Deco is stylish.

years ago I worked in a posh hotel that used "Kings" and I thought it very opulent, but now I can't stand it..

I don't like "Studio" because someone I didn't like had it.

I don't like white handled knives because they were old fashioned when I was growing up (and can't go in a dishwasher)

your own life experience will form your opinion.

Most important thing is that you like it, and will use it, not put it away for "best."i

Stilton1 · 26/10/2021 17:12

So many wonderful opinions! Very helpful. Thank you so much.

PigletJohn, when I’ve come across your comments on other threads you always give such a wealth of information. Is there any subject on which you aren’t an expert?!

I can see both viewpoints - dated vs classic. I was looking at it from a classic Art Deco perspective. I agree that the Willow is also very nice as well as being more contemporary.

Those of you who have the Amefa Harley, it’s good to know that they are holding up well, as it can be hard to find reviews about that particular brand. From what I’ve seen, I suspect those who take the time to come back and write a review are those who’ve had a bad experience!

Thank you again!

It looks like pub cutlery. Nothing wrong with it, not really my taste.

EerilyDisembodied · 26/10/2021 17:41

The Eternal Beau comparison is exactly how it feels to me too. I'm no expert but I prefer a plain handle. The Willow is much nicer. I agree with pps that how it feels and sits on the plate is really important too.

HistoriaTrixie · 26/10/2021 17:50

It's very nice looking but (especially for the price) I wouldn't like to have the brand name blazoned along the knife handle like that. It's obtrusive.

HistoriaTrixie · 26/10/2021 17:51

Ugh. Knife blade, sorry!

YouJustFoldItIn · 26/10/2021 18:55

(i have never in my life critiqued cutlery until today)

I'm not sure any of us have. Grin

Cherrysoup · 26/10/2021 19:35

I don’t think anyone’s opinion matters given it’s you that’s going to live with it. You like what you like.

Don’t all brands of cutlery have that? Or ‘stainless steel’ which is surely no less obtrusive?
LIZS · 26/10/2021 21:21

Lol, it is perfectly normal to have the brand etched on the knife blade and other items back stamped. 18/10 is good quality stainless steel, many "everyday" brands are 13 Chrome quality. Those are probably traditional two piece knives rather than stamped out in one.

Fozzleyplum · 26/10/2021 21:32

I like it; you can't go wrong with classic cutlery. I have Arthur Price rattail, and I have exceptionally good taste, just like you, OP Grin.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 26/10/2021 21:36

It's very dated but I wouldn't bat an eye if I saw it in someone's home.
