Average speed cameras - am I missing something?!

Close to where I live is a major A road, which is currently having improvements done. There is a section of dual carriageway which has average speed cameras (50mph) for a good few miles. Whenever I drive through this section, I am very cautious not to go above 50mph - occasionally I’ll notice myself drifting ever so slightly up to 52mph or so, so I tend to put the cruise control on. Without fail, there is a steady stream of cars going past me on the outside lane, going considerably faster than 50mph. Do they know something I don’t know? Do they just not give a shit if they get a speeding ticket? Do they know some secret about the cameras being switched off at certain times? I’m not sure why, but it infuriates me! It’s not like I’m in a rush to get anywhere, it is more the curiosity of why people do it that gets to me!

I did a speed awareness course a few years ago (my bad), and was amazed that 3 of the people on a 5 person course thought they wouldn't get caught because they were 'slowing down to 50,ph at the cameras'. So they were speeding between the cameras and then slowing down when they reached them.

Despite the instructor explaining the concept of an average speed camera to them, I still don't think they quite understood why they had been caught...

There's a section of urban dual carriageway that I use that's got 40mph average speed cameras. It's rare to get down there without having to stop for any of the traffic lights/ pedestrian lights. I do wonder how the camera system takes them into account...

I was going to say, loads of people just don't understand the concept of an average speed check and think they just have to slow down for the camera 🤦‍♀️

Speedos on HGVs are calibrated properly and so the speed they read is what they are doing, unlike with cars.

I know my car shows 53 when I’m doing 50 so I set my cruise control at 53

Near where I live there is a dual carriageway split into 3 sections by 2 roundabouts with 4-5 cameras in between each. Each of the 3 sections is a separate 'set' of cameras, as lots of people soon realised when they went live and they ended up with 3 tickets in one go!
