Trains Liverpool to London Waterloo

We are coming to London in February and want to book travel for a friend to join us from the North West in advance, preferably a direct service. Waterloo works best for our plans. If you do this or similar journeys which is the best and cheapest service to use?

Trains from Liverpool go into Euston then it would be tube on northern line to Waterloo I'd have thought

Kpo58 · 26/10/2021 09:09

Trains from Waterloo don't go up north. They mainly go to the south coast.

Palavah · 26/10/2021 09:09

I use trainpal. Not sure how well it will explain this, but trains from Liverpool Lime St will come into Euston so you'll need either a ticket that covers the tube journey from Euston to Waterloo OR a day's travelcard on the tube if you'll be doing lots of hopping about on the london transport network.

I would concentrate on the Liverpool to London section, then you just need a tube/bus.

Of just use your contactless.

Liverpool to Euston, then tube or bus to Waterloo. Use contactless on buses and tube.

Westfacing · 26/10/2021 09:55

Definitely the tube from Euston to Waterloo which will take about 15 minutes - the bus will take ages particularly if traffic is bad.

Using contactless card.

It’s a very easy tube journey from Euston to Waterloo

Comefromaway · 26/10/2021 10:08

Have a look on Splitticketing.com as sometimes it's cheaper.

Avanti is a direct train but you can get a slower, cheaper London NorthWestern train but you have to change at Crewe.

So no need to book in advance then, just buy a ticket for timetable service from Lime St on the day? I think our friend has an Oyster card for the tube. Thank you for the replies!

Book at least 3 months in advance from Lime Street to London as that will make it much cheaper. On the day tickets to London are at least £100 one way. Then just Tube to Waterloo, which obviously you don't book.

Ashard20 · 26/10/2021 17:20

I would seriously recommend that you buy in advance for Liverpool to London Euston. The difference is huge!

Comefromaway · 26/10/2021 17:55

Tickets are usually much cheaper in advance, depending whether you choose a fixed time or flexible.

You don’t need an Oyster card for the tube, just a contactless debit card.

Libertaire · 26/10/2021 17:59

Buy your Liverpool to Euston tickets as far ahead as possible for the best fare.

You don’t need an Oyster card for the tube. Just use your normal contactless debit or credit card. It’s much cheaper than buying individual tickets and your daily spend is capped.
