Shortages in shops?

julieca · 25/10/2021 23:31

Both myself and DP have confirmed covid, so I am doing shopping online. We are both feeling pretty rough so I am trying to order very easy meals or ready-made meals. The problem is there are so many shortages.
I am sure it wasn't this bad even a week ago. Other seeing this where they live?

yep! its very noticeable

more expensive too

julieca · 25/10/2021 23:39

It has surprised me just how many things are out of stock. And I cant do any of the bundle offers as there are often so few things available.

Gaps on the shelves were very noticeable in my regular shops from spring through and summer. However the last few weeks less gaps or packing out of shelves and able to get more of the stuff on my list. Prices keep going up though.

AlexaShutUp · 25/10/2021 23:41

It has been like that for months here. I'm used to it now. There is still plenty of food. Just not the food that you want.

Hope your covid is mild!

julieca · 25/10/2021 23:45

@AlexaShutUp thanks. I am not worried I am going to end up in hospital, but I am pretty rough. I normally cook from scratch so some things missing is not normally an issue. But I am struggling to find things that we would eat and are easy. It has shocked me. All the things I would buy for an easy meal or ready-made are out of stock. So no fish pie of any kind for example. Only a couple of ready-made curry choices. Hardly any salad pots.

Seeing lots of Americans post about food shortages.

Was there an American brexit?

Or can we all admit you can’t pause society

julieca · 26/10/2021 00:11

I have a lot of family and friends in America and none of them are experiencing food shortages.

Germany has some shortages too

BleakExpectations · 26/10/2021 08:17

Some shortages where we are. We've had to try and find alternatives and go without sometimes.

Mantlemoose · 26/10/2021 08:20

No shortages where I am just idiots posting about them which makes more idiots buy extra!

TheChosenTwo · 26/10/2021 08:50

We needed bin bags the other day, was quite surprised to find the whole 4 bin bag shelves totally empty! Quite a random thing to run out of - I went to the next supermarket and they were running low but did have some.

borntobequiet · 26/10/2021 08:55

I’m in Portugal at the moment and absolutely no shortages of anything.
Brexit is destroying the UK economy.

ConcernedAuntie · 26/10/2021 08:58

Was speaking to friends in France at the weekend. They said they still sometimes have difficulty getting flour where they live. Also gaps in the supermarkets for fruit and veg, surprisingly.

Went to my local Tesco last week and there were a couple of gaps, not sure what was supposed to be there, but I got everything I needed.

There doesn't seem to be any problem getting shelves and shelves of hallowen crap.

IsDaveThere · 26/10/2021 09:04

I couldn't get any multipacks of any variety of Walkers crisps from Tesco yesterday, which seemed a bit random!

Lunariagal · 26/10/2021 09:18

Randomly, I've struggles to get guinea pig food this week.

CactusFlowers · 26/10/2021 09:19

Yep, I noticed this when doing online shops. Items out of stock and nothing to substitute with.

Also toiletries. Popped into Savers to grab some bits and there were loads of gaps on the shelves.

Deathraystare · 26/10/2021 09:23

Yep this is now the 'norm' in my little Sainsburys. I ordered some black bags off Amazon in the end as didn't want to go around loads of supermarkets on the off chance that one of them might have them!

Also loads of empty shelves in my little Sainsburys, Tesco and Waitrose.

CovidinPrimary · 26/10/2021 09:27

I haven’t found any shortages in Yorkshire, my local shops (mini sainsbos, coop etc) are over flowing! One is selling bags of flour for 25p!

I had noticed the fresh meat section being low, but not empty like only a few steaks left and no yellow sticker bargains! But I think that was to do with the Gas issue and seems to have resolved now

HijadelaLuna · 26/10/2021 09:32

@Ariela

Germany has some shortages too
Huh- this is news to me and I live in Germany. This is starting to remind me of the former eastern Germany though were people had to cue for basic food but were made believe by their government that the evil west wasn‘t doing any better…
EdgeOfTheSky · 26/10/2021 09:44

It’s patchy. Things disappear for a bit and the re-appear, and something else vanishes.

Lots of different causes, Brexit included, alongside lorry drivers and COVID.

But in general we still have greater choice than we would have had in the 1960s, for example.

No consolation for you though OP, when you want to be able to grab what you know for minimal effort when feeling so poorly.

Hope you feel better very soon.

julieca · 26/10/2021 23:33

Yes, we have greater choice than in the 1960s when spaghetti had to be bought at Italian grocers and olive oil came in small bottles from the chemist.
Sorry but that really is a low bar to compare it to.
